Album Description

Packaged together in a luxury long box of 4 CDs, The Penguin Café Orchestra, A History brings together 60 tracks, two previously unreleased. The selection spans the entire history of the band for the first time and comes complete with a 48-page booklet featuring numerous previously unseen photos and pictures together with a newly commissioned essay by Robert Sandall. All of the tracks have been remastered under the watchful eye of Arthur Jeffes, the son of the late band leader Simon Jeffes. Arthur has also written the sleeve notes, reminiscing about growing up surrounded by such weird and wonderful music and circumstance. The Penguin Café Orchestra is known intimately by the devoted and subconsciously by millions. Their tracks have appeared in numerous films and adverts over the years, notably "Beanfields" in the Eurotunnel ad, "Telephone and Rubber Band" in the Mercury One To One ad and "Perpetuum Mobile" in the Knorr Herb Cubes ad.

I bought the box set aswell as the the single c.d 'a brief history' and to be honest I think that anyone unfamiliar would be better off buying 'Brief History' first because it has all the famous tracks on.

If you know their music then it would be a good idea to buy the single c.d 'Brief History' aswell as the 'History' box set.

The remastering is top notch.

My only criticism is that it's a little heavy on the live tracks.

I bought this collection having only heard a bit of PCO - risky! But I'm delighted.

The music has a lot of energy, it's fresh and often downright catchy! But at the same time - and this may seem a contradiction - it feels like it's from an era that has passed away. I personally find it very touching, and I can't quite make sense of it.

There is a written history of the orchestra included, which helped me appreciate the music. It's very attractive and interesting. Unfortunately, it isn't bound very well and it started to fall apart on me quite soon. Out came the sticky tape. This is why I haven't given the collection the full 5 stars.

Still, there isn't a bad CD, nor a track that I want to skip, in this entire collection. You'll find yourself not just listening to the Penguin Cafe, but visiting it from your armchair!

Just wonderful, especially the live recordings, some repetition but great music that merits this. Telephones and rubber bands wasted before this band got hold of them
