Amazon.co.uk Review
There must have been more lame Batman games created in the last decade than there are tights-wearing felons in Gotham City, but thankfully Batman: Vengeance hits the Bat-target with the proverbial golden Batarang. Because the game is based on The New Batman Adventures (a version of the animated Batman series which has never been seen in the UK--except as a part of The Batman And Superman Movie), the visuals are 3-D versions of the cartoon's very stylised designs. This can sometimes cause the backdrops to be rather lacking in detail but generally it's an interesting and unusual look.

The gameplay is perhaps most similar to a more focused version of Soul Reaver, with plenty of Batgadgets to play with, and even a little bit of Metal Gear-esque sneaking around required. There's also an excellent 3-D combat system and a bunch of driving and puzzle sub-games of varying quality.

A few obvious niggles do manage to get under your tights, such as the oversensitive controls, the intrusive loading times and the often frustratingly obscure level designs, but the joy of being Batman and flinging exploding gas balls at everyone manages to overcome. In the video games world Spider-Man still rules the superhero roost, but this is easily the best Batgame yet seen. --David Jenkins

Product Description
In Batman: Vengeance, the gritty underworld of Gotham ignites as Batman becomes the target of a nerve-rattling conspiracy. After the Joker plummets to his death in an attempt to kill Batman, Gotham's criminals quickly escalate their schemes to gain power. Batman discovers subtle links in these seemingly unrelated crimes, but is forced undercover after being framed for an attack on Commissioner Gordon. Hunted by the police, the Dark Knight must pinpoint the unseen enemy weaving this sinister web before Gotham City falls to a fiery demise. Batman: Vengeance introduces the most versatile 3-D Batman game yet, with more than 500 animated movements, special fighting moves, and a multifunctional cape with its own AI. For the first time, players can journey through a fully rendered 3-D Gotham City with Batman's sleek weapons and devices at their fingertips, including the BatGrapple, BatScope, Batarang, BatLauncher, flash bombs, and more. There is a huge array of gameplay modes: exploring, fighting, first-person shooter, driving, flying, freefall, and puzzles.

The Gotham City environment, reconstructed in full 3-D, contains 19 playable maps, including the rooftops, Gotham Industrial Research, and the Batcave. There are also more than 40 minutes of cinematics featuring the original voice cast of TV's The New Batman Adventures. The game's original story line was written in collaboration between Warner Brothers and DC Comics from the files of The New Batman Adventures. The Dolby Surround 5.1 Sound soundtrack features original music inspired by the television series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Batman......Definite buy., 19 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I managed to get a copy of Batman from the states this morning and so far I have spent all day on it!
Batman Vengeance looks like a re-creation of the animated TV series in a videogame.
It won't break any molds, but it's a good arcade game.

You begin by training in the Bat Cave and work out the mysterious details of the game's first set of clues.
The Joker is the first bad guy to appear, and it is he who sets up Batman to start with. its got all the characters here including Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Harley Queen, too.

The game itself is a compilation of arcade-like gameplay styles that relies on a third-person perspective camera angle to show Batman in his basic mode. He can walk, run and jump,as well as use a dozen or so bat gadgets to complement his mad martial arts. I have managed to drive the Batmobile and although I haven`t reached it yet you can fly the Batplane on the later stages.

There are many items and gadgets to collect including Flashbombs, batcuffs, batarangs, remote Electric Charges, batgrapple, nets and the Bat Launcher.

Batman is controlled in two ways, in the third-person perspective that's occasionally altered with cut animated scenes, sort of like in Resident Evil or Onimushi, but also in the first-person mode. The problem I`m finding with this is that you can't get to every one of Batman's moves and gadgets and fight at the same time. In first-person mode they can explore and use gadgets freely, but they can't do things like open doors, or punch and kick. Then in third-person perspective, players can open doors, jump, walk, fight and kick, but they can't freely access all of their weapons.

You will find that in addition to the regular set of moves, they earn special kick-butt automatic Special Moves with look suprisingly similar to the old batman game I have on my Snes.

Batman Vengeance looks exactly like the TV show ( the new cartoon one that is), simple, flat textures with highly stylized backgrounds and character designs.
Gotham city looks quality, complete with red skies, comic book architecture, and tons of style. oh and the usual Blinking lights flittering everywhere!
I reccomend this to anyone who enjoys a good old beat-em-up, its well worth the money so far!

1.0 out of 5 stars Dastardly Disappointment, 27 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Looks good, sounds good, has Batman in it but plays like an absolute dog.

It manages to recreate all those great episodes where Batman tries to jump a gap, but plunges to his death. When Batman leaps across rooftops, wobbles chaotically in the air, plunges to his death. Or that great adventure when Batmans point of view decides to reverse itself and Batman plunges to his death. Or even when he carefully edges along a ledge, takes a step too far and, you guessed it, plunges to his death.

Get the idea? It all looks good, dark and moody like the cartoon series but if the games a pig to play it's not much fun. Even the tutorial is a bit lame, and some of the power ups in the game actually rely on you failing a jump to be found!

Major disappointment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Please God, tell me I didn't just spend £30 on this tripe., 4 Mar 2002
By silentman@btintertnet.com (Warrington, England) - See all my reviews
The game looks great graphicly. The designers have remained true to the dark, retro feel of the animated series. They have also taken a unique perspective on game play, managing to make the whole event as interesting as whisking eggs.
The power-up items are poorly hidden and the only challenge the game has to offer comes in the form of a series of irritating jump sequences where one mistake eather means back to the start or death. Just to make things worse the character controle is terrible and not unlike that of a rabid pig in a snowstorm.
Nasty, annoying, Tripe.
Even if you must have everything ever made to do with Batman, just buy another novelty mug.

For a fan of the animated series, this is a superb extra episode(s). For gamers, it is pretty average. Either way, it is worth a punt.
