good idea but ..., 24 Aug 2003
Strategy games are good and always will be because they give you almost unlimited control. This is why games like "The Sims", "Command and Conquer", and fottball management games are such good fun. It is obvious that MASA group have realised this and decide to take a new slant on the genre. The idea in conflict zone is not just to have military strength, but to have the media and public on your side. This can sometimes take control away from the player and forces you into desperation sometimes and forces you to try and be careful about civilians etc. The idea sounds very clever and adds an extra dimension to the strategy element. But when executed didn't work that well, read on. Like Command and Conquer this game has two factions. A "good and evil" type scenario, and of course each side has its own strengths and weaknesses. It also has stolen the combat and construction ideas from command and conquer. But all of these are not done as well as Westwood did because they concentrated on other things as well. The control system definitely needs work too. Most control panels are only accessible by pressing at least two buttons simultaneously. this can make life difficult to the point of total fustration whilst under heavy fire from the enemy. Also the idea of media control may be revolutionary but not done very well as only one or two things are needed to be kept under survailance to win the media over. Graphically the game isn't bad but there are far better graphics on other games on the PS2. Sound wise the game however could be far better. The voices are good but the sound effects are very unrealistic and the music just gets annoying. The main redeeming feature of this game is its life span. The campaign is pretty big and with two different sides to choose from with different objectives, plus a skirmish mode for one off fights. In conclusion this game is solid with some clever ideas but in the end it just wasn't executed very well. Great for fans of the genre but not for many other people. Try renting it first just to make sure its your cup of tea.

Another attempt to outsmart command and conquer, 16 April 2002
Mistake number one was going through the games' tutorial section, which starts off by issuing such simple and remedial instructions as "Use the left stick to move the camera around", before moving on to explaina totally bewildering set of button combinations that become exponentially more complex as each new task is taught. L2 and triangle, R2 and square, R1 and X - you've got more of a chance of winning the lottery while being struck by lightning for the fourth time then correctly guessing how to active the damn map display. At least it's voicedby a woman who sounds nice, but all she really needs to say is "Conflict Zone is a bit like Command + Conquer" and any gamer worth his or her entrance feewould understand and use their initiative to figure things out. Although, if she was being really honest she'd say, "Its a bit slow, stuttering and less well presented than C + C" to give a more accurate description of conflict zone, seeing as a rather duff clone is what you're dissapointingly lumbered here. You construct buildings, train people, transport troops, fend off attacks and launch you're own counter strikes, all on a variety of grassy green, whitey snow and yellowy desert battle locations. The best parts of it look well below average, the worst parts are truly appaling. Square soldiers moonwalk over terrible terrain, none of the machines or buildings look remotely solid or convincing, and theres not much of a horizon, which is curious seeing as how little is being demanded by your PS2. The landscape blends in and out of a thick white fog, looking laughably bad when viewing the game from a low camera angle. It gets very jerky too, especially when 20 tanks are descending on your base to capture you're arseand transport it to a nearby toture facility And should you be so bold as to rotate the camera while said tanks are on the screen it gets jerkier still. So, it's jerky. The underlying game experience is just plain old fashioned and slow. More importantly, this type of strategic warefare thang has been done so well in the past that it's puzzling to see it being done so badly and ineffectively here. It's a strategic rarity on Ps2 but sadly one not worth bothering with.Even hardcore stastic fans will be disappointed at how poorly Conflict Zone accounts for itself. There are better things (such as Red Faction)to spend money ..on.

NEAREST THING TO COMMAND AND CONQUER ON PS2., 28 Jul 2003
When i found this game i didn't really know what to make of it. But as soon as i stuck it in my console and started playing it, i found the games graphics and gameplay were remarkably similar to the command and conquer series, which im a huge fan off. So it was a huge relief to finally find a game with the same quality. The game has a sophisticated Al engine, also used by today's defence forces. This gives the most realistic graphics for a game giving you the most intense emotional realism of modern warfare. Need i say more. And the idea of the game is to BUILD TO BUY AND THEN DESTROY.
