"Ostinato" means a repeated melody in a low register forming the basis for elaborations by other instruments. But don't get the idea that this is repetitive or boring music: it's lively, virtuosic dance music of the renaissance period.

This disk consists of 17 tracks by Renaissance composers amounting to almost 75 minutes of ravishing, addictive music, including music by Diego Ortiz, Henry Purcell, and Pachelbel's famous Canon, but in a jaunty rendition miles away from the usual "Steppes of Central Russia" type performance. Centrepiece of the set is an 8-minute improvisation which uses a "perpetuo moto" idiom.

Directed from the viola da gamba by Jordi Savall, a leading exponent of Renaissance and (fairly) "early" music, the other instruments include theorbo, medieval harp, violins and harpsichord.

As usual with Alia Vox CDs, the excellently-produced gatefold packaging includes a 40-page booklet with an introduction to the music and its period in six languages.

If you enjoyed Savall's "La Folia" or the selection of Jean-Baptiste's music for the Sun King, you will definitely like this disk.

Once again Hesperion XXI, lead by Jordi Savall have shown what riches lay in Europe's music archives. 'Ostinato' takes its theme from the practice, common in the 16th and 17th centuries of using a regular pattern in the bass part over which treble instruments could successively elaborate. This was used extensively by a variety of composers throughout Europe; taking their lead from the rhythmical patterns used in contemporary dance tunes. Hesperion XXI use a carefully chosen selection of plucked and stringed instruments to create a rich variety of timbres. The rhythmic kick is given by the judicious use of a number of percussion instruments.

Included amongst less familiar pieces is that baroque stalwart, Pachelbel's Kanon and Gigue, here pushed forward at a brisk tempo rather than the funereal pace it is usually performed at. All the pieces are played with great verve and élan. It is obvious the entire ensemble enjoyed themselves immensely during the recording - listen in particular to Diego Ortiz's Passamezzo moderno (Recercada II). You will be delighted and uplifted by this music. I heartily recommend it.
