Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Epson Stylus C80 is a high-speed, 4-colour printer for the advanced home and small business user. Combining a separate cartridge 4-colour system and pigment inks for superior plain paper printing, documents are waterfast, lightfast and smudge proof as soon as they leave the printer. It also offers exceptional print quality - combining 2880 dpi, 3 pl Ultra MicroDot and Variable-Sized Droplet Technology - providing high-speed text, DTP and photo quality printing as standard.

Combining ultra-fast true black and colour print performance, with superb print quality from its enhanced 2880 dpi print technology and the Epson Perfect Picture Imaging System, the Stylus C80 is the ideal printer for individual power-users at home or in the office, and for work-groups of networked users. The Stylus C80 uses an advanced version of Epson's Micro Piezo print head incorporating Variable Size Droplet Technology combined with 3 picolitre Ultra MicroDot ink droplets.

The Stylus C80 includes support for the Universal Serial Bus, supported by Microsoft Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows 2000 and Apple iMac.

Featuring a brand new, wide print head design, the Stylus C80 is able to provide much greater coverage for each pass of the printhead over the paper. This, combined with advanced stepper motor design to allow high speed paper feeding, means the Stylus C80 can achieve very high speed black text printing.

Four Intellidge ink cartridges are used and allow the individual colours to be replaced as and when they run out. In applications where long print runs of similar coloured output (eg literature or presentations) are produced, this technology will allow significant cost savings.

A major advance for the Stylus C80 is the use of a new pigment ink for both black and colour inks. These have been developed specifically to offer laser sharp performance in black and colour on plain paper. The quick drying inks are smudge proof, water proof and light fast allowing the output from a Stylus C80 to be used in a wide variety of applications where durable or archive quality output is required.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons of the C80, 1 Nov 2001
By A Customer
The main reason for purchasing the C80 was the claimed print speed and the separate ink catridges. (I have previously used most of the Epson Stylus printers).

My first task was to install the printer, easily achieved with the excellent installation chart and CD. Within a few mins the printer was up and running.

I then decided to run a print speed comparison with my Stylus 900. As I felt the C80 should be more than a match.

The results I found were very unexpected. Especially given the product's main selling point is "20ppm high quality plain paper printer". The only way this sort of speed is achievable is in Economy mode. Which as the name suggests is not going to produce quality print.

Just for comparison I tried out some more print tasks with the following results.

10 page Word document, black text Only, 360 DPI in 1 min 15 seconds.
8 page Word document, black and color, 360 DPI in 2 min 53 seconds.
4 page Corel 10 document, black and color, 360 DPI in 2 min 19 seconds.
10 page Word document, black only, Economy in 40 seconds.

(My PC by the way is an AMD Athlon 1000Mhz, 512Mb RAM, Radeon 32 DDR, 40Gbye IBM Deskstar).

The disappointing print speed was however compensated by the following:-

The printer is extremely quite in use, far superior to previous Stylus printers.
The quality of the printouts with the new Pigment inks was excellent even on photocopier paper.
The black text printing is much improved.

Overall I am happy with the C80, but slightly disappointed with the claimed print speeds.

P.S. I am still amazed in this day and age that you can open the top cover of the printer and it still carries on printing.

4.0 out of 5 stars No time to put the kettle on!, 21 Jan 2002
By A Customer
As soon as my new Epson C80 arrived I excitedly plugged it in and installed the software. All this was very easy and idiot-proof. I the put my new printer to the test - printing out a bitmap quality image. The first print was a load of rubbish (the colour was wrong and there was banding everywhere!), however after a bit of playing around with the settings, I managed to get quite a good print from it.

The thing about the C80 that hits you straight away is the speed! It can print a 10 page Word document in roughly a minute! Which is great, except for those for us who used to go and put the kettle on when printing out a large document. There's not enough time to make a coffee!

The new Epson ink (which has a chip in it) means that you have to buy Epson ink and not ink from other manufactuers. At first I was sceptical about this, however, having used Epson ink for just over a week now, I'm hooked! The print quality is far better and it actually is waterproof! I bathed a print in water for five minutes and it still looked great!

Overall, the Epson C80 is a great printer for the home or small business. If you get a new C80 and the print quality is rubbish - don't despair - it gets much better after a few prints!

5.0 out of 5 stars Epson C80 not Os X compatible, 17 May 2002
By A Customer
I bought the Epson C80 from the Apple Store for my new iMac, only to discover that Epson's claims of OS X compatibiltiy are not accurate. I, and many other users, constantly receive "communication errors" when attempting to print. Sometimes you can work around this, and sometimes you can't. It's all very frustrating. And Epson, which released the drivers last Fall, has done nothing to correct the situation. But don't take my word for it, just search the Apple discussion boards for C80 and you'll see the legion of complaints.

The C80 may be a fine printer for a PC, but as an Apple user you're definitely treated like a second class citizen.
