Product Description

The Sony DCR-IP7 Digital Handycam is one of a new generation of digital camcorders that employ a revolutionary recording format called "MICROMV". The DCR-IP7 is also Sony's first camcorder to implement Bluetooth technology to enhance its network functionality via mobile phones. In a digital age, where many people integrate their camcorder and PC to create their personal image capture, edit and archive networks, MICROMV sets new standards in compact size, user friendliness and advanced PC friendly features.

Bluetooth is an industry standard for simple, cordless connection and data transfer. Within a range of 10m, Bluetooth components can automatically detect and communicate with each other. As well as browsing the Web, users can access picture/text messaging facilities through their camcorder systems. In addition to its i.LINK capabilities, the DCR-IP7 possesses a USB connection for the rapid transfer of audiovisual material on its Memory Stick to your PC. Another option providing total PC connectivity is Memory Stick: the DCR-IP7 incorporates a new MPEGMOVIE AD facility. This advanced function lets you store up to 280 seconds of video material on an 8MB Memory Stick (82 minutes on a 128 MB Memory Stick) before transferring it directly to your PC for editing, archiving or e-mailing to friends. The camcorder comes supplied with an 8MB Memory Stick.

MICROMV is the first Sony consumer format to use the MPEG2 compression standard as the basis for its operating system. This advanced recording technology offers outstanding video and audio quality and uses cassettes that are 30 per cent the volume compared with Mini DV cassettes. This space saving results in a significantly smaller camcorder that is easy to carry and simple to operate.

Standard features in the IP7 include Super Steady Shot, Carl Zeiss lens, a 120x digital zoom (10x optical zoom) capability, 180,000 pixel Precision Viewfinder and a Progressive Shutter System providing high-quality image capture in any conditions. The camcorder integrates a 2.5-inch 210,000 pixel LCD monitor with a playback zoom facility for instantaneous, high-quality playback of material. For PC connection it features an i.LINK (MICROMV IN/OUT) with cable supplied, plus USB connection. An associated analogue in/out lets you import material from other sources, including your movie archives.

5.0 out of 5 stars MICRO MARVEL, 18 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Well what can I say but WOW!

I've been using a Sony Hi8 camcorder for seven years now but it was the sheer miniscule beauty of the IP7 that finally persuaded me to make the jump to digital. Although I've had a camcorder for many years I've found that I often leave the thing at home because I can't be bothered to carry it around, then I wish that I'd taken it. That's a problem you won't have with the IP7.

The IP7 has all of the features you could possibly want, packed into a camcorder the size of a compact camera. It fits comfortably in your hand, and contrary to many other reviews the zoom control is easily mastered and operates flawlessly. The 2.5 inch screen gives an excellent view of the action and all of the myriad of features are within easy reach. The quality of material is equal to DV with the added advantage of the camera's tiny dimensions.

It's true that on first impression 'indoor' scenes were a little grainy but I found that after a short while playing with the settings they were back up to an excellent standard. I really cannot fault this camera on any front. It's a joy to use in the field and a joy to edit your movies when you get them home. It's true that none of the major DV editing packages currently support the new format (something that I am sure will change very shortly) but in the meantime the supplied Sony 'Movieshaker' software is more than adequate.

I'm no Steven Speiberg but I was turning out professional looking productions within a couple of hours of first using the software. 'Movieshaker' automatically aquires your footage from the camera and then quickly guides you through the process of trimming and re-arranging scenes, adding soundtracks including narration and music and then finishing off with scene transitions, special effects and titles. I'm sure the package will do a lot more but I'm still learning. Needless to say that so far I'm impressed. Once your production is complete it's quick and easy to either record it back to the camera for tranfer to SVHS or VHS, or it can be saved to PC in a variety of file sizes and formats for archiving or copying to CD or I presume DVD.

The IP7 is behind some of it's rivals in the quality of the still shots it will take. This wasn't of great concern to me as I already have a 3.3 megapixel DSC which I will continue to use for serious photography. However I did use the IP7 to take some stills and the quality was certainly good enough for holiday or family snaps, and printed at 6x4 with no noticable quality problems.

This camera will never appeal to camcorder purists because on paper at least it's resolution is inferior to mini DV. In practice I could see no discernable difference between the two formats. The minature size may put some off, again having used the IP7 as a hand held camera, on a monpod, and on a tripod I can find no flaw.

If you're looking for a top quality movie and stills camera then you might want to try something with a bigger CCD and megapixel stills facility. If however you're looking for a top quality movie camera with the added bonus of a good stills facility, then the IP7 is it, in the smallest package imaginable.

My biggest complaint against my old handycam was that it was too big, even though it was certainly no bigger than todays Hi8 models. It was just too much bother to carry around. In contrast the IP7 really is a take everywhere, use anywhere solution that means you'll never miss that special moment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Small but lots of drawbacks - beware, 14 Feb 2002
By A Customer
If you want the smallest camcorder in the world, you found it. I bought the IP7 in London and have used it extensively WW. As a pure camcorder it is great for outdoor work -- small and hardly noticed. It is not great indoors, the images are grainy and greyed out. The MPEG process and tiny HAD CCD mean it is better suited to the outdoors. Outdoors the quality is comparable with my DV camera.

The Bad News:
Here is where the camera is really let down. There is no software that will let you manipulate Sony's MPEG2 output from the i-Link except Sony MovieShaker (comes with Camera). The MicroMV format is MPEG2 Transport Systems which are completely incompatible with DVD MPEG2! There are no applications like Adobe Premiere that let you import Sony MPEG2 Transport Systems. Sony MovieShaker only lets you save as MPEG1 for emailing or lets you save back to the cassette. Grrr.

Forget trying to make DVDs or anything high quality. You should avoid this camera and stick to DV Camcorders for computer editing. Why Sony did not create a plug in for Premiere? or a MPEG2 (DVD compaptible) save option in MovieShaker baffles me. And because you will need to store your work on MicroMV tapes be prepared to pay a lot for them.

As a gadget for taking with you everywhere, 10/10. As a closed proprietary format (MicroMV)- which has nothing to do with DVD MPEG2 - 0/10.

My opinion - Wait a while until Sony fix this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small wonder, 21 Dec 2001
By A Customer
I Bought a dcr-ip7 while i was in Canada preparing to fly to Germany.I had stopped bringing my lager handy cam due to it being a bother to hang it around my neck, when not in use, and how it wopuld bring unwanted atraction as a tourist.Post 911 and being an American i wanted to even more nonreconisable as a tourist then usual.
I have to say for portablity it was great it fit in to my coat pocket as wellas my wifes purse. The stabilty and zoom were ecelent. the Zoom button took some getting use to for it was very tiny.If you have very large fingers or arthritic it could be a problem..The microphone had excelent pic up. It also was able to film in very low light.the ablity to use the three inch sceen was great for filming aswell as reviewing what you have filmed(the playback also has sound a great plus.)We drifted to Switserland and to the town of Zermatt. The clearity of the film as wellas the zoom took great shots that did justice to the sight.
one oddity is the stop action between each segment that is filmed. At the end of each segment it does a freeze frame that lasts for about a second.this takes some getting use to so transitions between segments are not choppy.this feature uis handy though when you are useing a computer to edit the film. The tape automaticly sequince with the software provided to break it the whole tape to a series of scenes that you can edit or merge to gether for one film. The films can be sent by e-mail or played on the computer or record to dvd or tape. One more draw back is at present it only will aquire the data with the firewire useing the included Movie Shacker program.I have not been able to use it with mgi or Pinical software, the camera my be to new for them to have a drieve for it.
The camera also included the BLuetooth internet system where you can use it as a browser or send and recieve e-mail,fun but it takes a long time to printout a message with the design of the keyboard function.
The memorey stick that lets you take jpg photes is also handy as it cuts down on the need to carry anouther still camera as well as a video camera. The pictures are very sharp and can be e-mail with the bluetooth internet as wellas the videos.
Please excuse the typos I have to type as fast as i can befor my internet provider disconnects.
In all I am very pleased , it has the quality that you would expect of Sony
