Amazon.co.uk Review
Glorious Bach is a simple, straightforward record of a concert at the Benedictine Abbey of Melk of three Bach works for the season of Advent. All of them are, in different ways, meditations on the imminent arrival of Christ, both as child and as Messiah, and on the role of Mary as his mother. Nikolaus Harnoncourt has this music in his bones and so do his impressive team of soloists and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir; the Concentus Musicus of Vienna by now play original-style instruments so smoothly that one has almost to remind oneself of how shocking the authenticity movement sounded a few short years ago. Ian Bostridge is especially fine in the extended tenor part of the less well-known piece Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland; Bostridge combines an absolute vocal purity with a fierce intelligence in his approach to the words--the advantage of the DVD is that it lets us see him and his fellow soloists thinking as well as singing. Christine Schafer is particularly fine in the Magnificat in D, in which Harnoncourt lets his orchestra rip, reminding us why this is such a popular festival piece.

On the DVD: The DVD, presented in 16:9 visual ratio, has sumptuous Dolby Digital sound, subtitles in English, German, Italian, Spanish and French and no other frills whatsoever. --Roz Kaveney

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspiring, 9 Jun 2002
By Norman Uppard (Harrow, London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent recording of a superb live performance (Advent Concert) of three of Bach's well known works -

1) Cantata BWV 61 "Come Redeemer of the Gentiles" (16m 10s),
2) Cantata BWV 147 "Heart and Mouth and Deed and Life" (32m 25s) and the
3) Magnificat in D major BWV 243 (28m 48s).

From the Kloster Melk Benedictine Monastery, Nicholaus Harnoncourt conducts with passion and sympathy the Conentus Musicus Vienna (on period instruments) and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir. The three female soloists - Christine Schafer, Anna Korondi and Bernarda Fink sing individually and together in a beautifully timed and convincingly relaxed manner. The male soloists, Ian Bostridge and Christopher Maltman are equally clear although less relaxed.

The camera work is also well timed and intelligently blends with the music. The only minor distractions are the views looking back towards Harnoncourt and the audience beyond. Harnoncourt uses his hands to conduct in a masterful and yet comfortable manner but he occasionally bulges his eyes for emphasis and this can be slightly disconcerting.

If you have ever felt that Bach's choral works are more difficult to enjoy than his purely instrumental work, I'd urge you to buy this DVD and discover just how enjoyable this music can be. You will not be disappointed.
