4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation of the all time classics., 16 Dec 2001
By A Customer
The rear cover of this album reads like a veritable who's who of music. It is particularly important that this album of classics of the past 50 years is released at a time when music and its stars are becoming ever more forgettable and disposable. The mixture of tracks is best described as eclectic- ranging from Bowie's recently sampled Ashes to Ashes(or the Return of Major Tom) to a modern classic Babylon by David Gray. My favourite tracks include Prince's "When Doves Cry", Carly Simon's vengeful attack on an ex "You're So Vain" and Sting's "An Englishman In New York." However there are some very noticeable omissions for instance no Beatles, no Rolling Stones, no Madonna and Kate Bush's excellent fantasy track "Wuthering Heights" is well deserving of a place here. Surely these deserve preference to "Breathless" by The Corrs which looks completely incongruous amidst top tunes like "Lay Lady Lay" by Bob Dylan and "20th Century Boy" by T-Rex. However overall an excellent album- a great relief from the dross that fills our airwaves today.
