Amazon.co.uk Review

Four CDs, 73 tracks, one rock & roll legend: Thin Lizzy's Vagabonds, Kings, Warriors and Angels contains all you need to know about the greatest bar room rock & roll band ever to inspire heavy drinking and boisterous behaviour. You can actually hear the early trio of Phil Lynott, Eric Bell and Brian Downey learn their instruments on CD1, with fluffed changes and loose timekeeping adding up to a suitably rough & ready charm. Lynott's roguish demeanour propelled Lizzy as much as the twin guitar acrobatics of Gorham and Robertson throughout the classic line years, of course, and every bad boy tear is here in full: "Still In Love", "Don't Believe A Word", "Sarah"--the list goes on and on. Lizzy knew their way around a killer pop tune as well and many of their anthems are all-time classics. "The Boys Are Back In Town", naturally (and if you've never screamed "the jukebox in the corner blasting out my favourite song!" you sorely need these CDs); "Dancing In The Moonlight" (a brilliant live version); "Alibi"; again the list is endless. The story ends with the band's heavier years, from "Killer On The Loose" to the much undervalued "Cold Sweat" and at the final, emotional reckoning, Thin Lizzy are vagabonds, kings, warriors, angels and, ultimately, heroes. --Ian Watson

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive lizzy collection, 13 Sep 2002
By Lizzy crew- Stocksbridge (Sheffield, South Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This set of CD's provides an insight into entire back catalogue of Thin Lizzy including many songs which other been available via the 'B' sides of singles (inc boys are back in town album) (Just the Two of us/ Half Castle / and Don't Play around) the latter of which should have been included on the Chinatown album as it is superb. The sole of Thin lizzy and the Legendary Lynott is captured as the 4 CD's oooze the quality of this band from the early days to the final stages of Phils music career. I saw the Grandslam Band in Sheffield in 1985 where Nineteen and sisters of mercy were performed which again other than a 12'' single for nineteen and bootlegs of Sister of mercy have never been released.

The 50 page booklet is well researched and well presented paying a worthy tribute to a top quality band. Thin Lizzy are sorely missed but their music does and will always continue to live on.

Other than missing off 'With Love', 'Its getting Dangerous', 'Old Flame', 'Military Man','Genocide' and 'spirit slips away' it can't be faulted.

Forget Oasis, listen to the real Hellraisers of rock who's music continues to inspire > buy it and you'll see why.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb summary of the history of Thin Lizzy, 16 Jan 2002
By celt2704@yahoo.com (Birmigham, UK) - See all my reviews
Starting with their first single (only ever released in Ireland) this 4CD set covers all the LPs produced and includes some B sides of singles which (as far as I am aware) never made it out via any other medium.
The CDs do include some gems of tracks that I had forgotten about from the early days. They have done a good job of including most of the seminal tracks. Check out the complete track listings, most people's favourites should be there.
The essay (written by a friend) inside the hard cover provides a further insight into Phil & the (various incarnations of) the band. I found it a very good read and picked up some interesting aspects to certain tracks which further increased my enjoyment when I listened to them. The writer does come over as someone who really understood & enjoyed Thin Lizzy/Phil.
Well worth it for both the completist and anyone who wants to get a good feel for the breadth of their material.
A good tribute to a great man & band, both sorely missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars two more great tracks for each "live" classic, 28 Mar 2002
By P. A. Murphy (London, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The first thing that struck me about this collection was that almost all the classic tracks (that they played live) are restricted to disc three. There are a few on discs two and four. However, the compiler of this collection really knows his Lizzy/Phil, and it shows. From "Remembeing" and "The Rocker" right through to "Sisters of Mercy" and "Nineteen", you can hear that, for every live classic like "The boys are back...", there are two more, equally good, but less well known tracks.
This is one marvellous tribute to a unique talent.
