Can it really be 11 years since Leif Ove Andsnes--subject of this two-CD "portrait"--was presented as Virgin Classics' fresh-faced new pianistic signing, a quiet but notable talent from Norway? In 1990 he was just 20 years old but even then his playing had an impressive maturity to it, a sense of reflection that signalled an artist who was going to go far. For some years now he has recorded exclusively for Virgin's big brother, EMI, and just looking at the list of works on this celebratory CD set reminds you of the sheer variety and eclecticism of Andsnes' musical tastes. Listen to the way he can bring new life to the most hackneyed repertoire--the Grieg Concerto, for example, has a freshness all too rarely encountered. And he's no slouch in the technical department either, as shown by his Liszt Mephisto Waltz No 1. His Haydn Concerto is pure delight too, while the last movement of the Schumann Fantasie will make you long to hear the rest of it (which is just as good). Then in complete contrast, Andsnes' 1990 recording of the Janacek Sonata--a dark, disturbing piece--shows the depth of his pianism. But perhaps some of the greatest delights here come from more unexpected quarters. Over the last few years he has explored some of the lesser-known corners of the Scandinavian repertory--from the quirkiness of Nielsen's "Jumping Jack"(one of the Humoreske Bagatelles) to the Debussian excerpts from David Monrad Johansen's Pictures. If you're already an Andsnes convert, you'll want this anyway. If you're not, you'll discover an outstanding pianist and probably make a few illuminating musical discoveries along the way. --Harriet Smith

I have had the opportunity to listen to the selection of music from the Portrait CD. Many words can desribe the sensations and thoughts that come to mind once the music is heard.... there are so many paths that they music takes the listener through. I feel that like the title of the CD, it represents a personal journey and growth that a person has gone through in their life, in which case the music so deeply resonates.
The music is a direct selection that the artist very carefully choosed, where he is able to express himself and outpour all emotions.

The journey of music, as similar as to life, takes the listener from moments of intensity, softness,harmony and as conflict. With all different selections, I felt that the music is in continual searching & meaning, perhaps as people we all do.....and even to say that the music comes across as an artist who paints a picture for the first time on a canvass, one never knows how it will begin, where it will lead to ....and where it will end up. As the painter is in contant creation, so is the musician....creating his life and being lead whereever the path brings him.

In retrospect, it has been a delight to be able to experience the music which tells such a story, enabling the listener to immerse in the senastion.

Deightful recording, full of personal expression, artistry and sensitivity.

Highly recommended to others,
where they will be able to enjoy the magical wonders of music and pianist, from Leif Ove Andsnes.
