Considering that Elisabeth Leonskaja was early recognized as a prodigy and went on to study with Sviatoslav Richter, who spoke strongly on behalf of her phenomenal gifts, it is surprising how long it takes one to stumble over her recordings. Maybe the market was saturated with (male) pianists already? Be that as it may, once one catches up with her reputation amongst fellow musicians, her lack of public recognition works in one's favor: Her full price recordings on Teldec are by now available on Apex for a third of their original prices. The sound quality is outstanding, with the digital recordings made in the late 80s and 90s.
To me, she came as a revelation. I already owned Schubert piano recitals by Wilhelm Kempff, Alfred Brendel. Radu Lupu, Maria Pires, Andras Schiff and Richter - yet when I first listened to Leonskaja's Schubert, her whole output went right into the electronic shopping basket.

This disc combines the Wanderer-Fantasie (Schubert's only real virtuoso composition for piano) and the Sonata No. 18 (Schumann's favorite). They make for a fantastic package indeed. I own Andras Schiff's reading of the Wanderer on ECM and had always been happy with it, yet by direct comparison it pales. Leonskaja (like Schiff) avoids a virtuoso air, letting the music speak for itself; but there is an extra amount for momentum, which serves the fantasy's musical purpose very well. Leonskaja manages a singing tone, which effortlessly combines lyrical qualities and drama.
The Sonata No. 18 is rightly considered one of Schubert's finest. Not yet as dark and foreboding as the subsequent works would be, it has all of Schubert's hallmark qualities of joy of living, depth of thought, and emotional complexity. Leonskaja's reading is as good as anyone's mentioned above.
A very, very fine Schubert CD in great sound quality.
