There once was a time you didn't ought to play Bach on a piano. Much to my pleasure, that time is gone now. As I am not the greatest lover of the harpsichord, I prefer Bach being played on a modern piano. And it has no sense to compare this cd with an "authentic" one, because in my opinion that would not be fair.
It is just a matter of taste.
But the danger could be that Bach being played on modern instruments could sound a bit or even very heavy.
I am glad to say that is not the case on this disc. Okay, playing Bach on a piano means that the music becomes more romantic, but Katsaris plays this music with great feeling and understanding, without getting rough or heavy-handed. Listen to the Largo of Concerto no. 5 and you know what I mean. In the faster parts of the Concertos Katsaris and The Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra play with much joy and spirit.
So this is a great disc for people who love music, not for purists. Altough maybe Murray Perahia (on Sony Classical) remains something special in this music, Katsaris and Rolla give performances that are very satisfying. And also considering the price of this disc: very much recommended!
