Synopsis

NOWHERE TO HIDE, the sixth feature from Korean New Wave writer-director Lee Myung-Se (GAGMAN) is an arty police action film jam-packed with style and attitude. Fans of Asian directors Takeshi "Beat" Kitano and John Woo will recognize the iconographic character of Detective Woo (Park Joong-Hoon), a slouching, thuggish homicide cop in South Korea's port city of Inchon. Woo smiles like a mischievous child, but he carries a baseball bat in his car, and leads a stooge-like squad of cops brandishing iron nightsticks. Along with his straitlaced partner, Kim (Jang Dong-Kun), Woo embarks on a sleepless, months-long hunt for the brutal killer who murdered a drug kingpin on the city's centralized monument, 40 Steps. Woo and his gangster-like men violently clash with suspects in colorful freeze frames and slow-motion shots, accompanied by a pumped-up rock score. After being defeated in a slapstick dance-like fight, a drug runner leads Woo to a primary suspect's femme fatale girlfriend, Juyon (Choi Ji-Woo). The detective then begins an infuriating game of watch and wait. Full of visual panache and humor, Lee's stylish thriller climaxes in a glorious rain-drenched mano a mano between the brutally tenacious Woo and his elusive prey.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Gem, 3 Jan 2004
By Punayut Klykoom (Pakred, Thailand) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a diamond of a film but, like a diamond, it's not without its flaws. Thankfully, you can forgive the tiny defects and just sit back and enjoy some stunning film work.
The most kaleidoscopic crime thriller you'll ever see, Nowhere to Hide is about how, over the next seventy-two hours, Detectives Woo (Park Joong Hoon) and Kim (Dong-Kun Jang) will push their skills to the limits and their team of cops to the edge as they conduct a manhunt for the elusive, and not to mention murderous, drug lord Chang Sungmin (Sung-kee Ahn).
"Nowhere To Hide" is absolutely one of the most visually stunning movies I've ever seen. Every scene is a cinematographic masterpiece. Myung-se Lee is a master of effectively using "particle storms" ... falling leaves, rain, snow, flowing sheets. I particularly like the ways he use contrast, high and low, as well as just about every visual trick imaginable. Style over substance. Sure...but great style.
A definite gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute favourite for a Korean movie buff, 22 Aug 2003
... I jump up and down with excitement every time I hear a mention about this film, despite first seeing it years ago in Australia. It is a perfect combination of intense Korean violence, atmosphere, wacky humour, and use of arty effects. And what can I say about the 2 most talented actors around - Ahn Sung-Ki and Park Joong-Hoon ... they say more with their face than they have to with words. Still incredible after watching it about 9 times. A must see.
