Amazon.co.uk Review

Le Secret, starring Anne Coesens (Ma Vie en Rose) and Tony Todd (Final Destination), is rather limp as erotic dramas go. The story is that of an attractive wife and mother trapped in a humdrum marriage to a loving but unexciting husband. This leads her to commit tasteful adultery, and then they all live "ambivalently ever after". The script tends to rely rather too often on unsubtle allegory, such as the husband's symbolic "death" during a game with their children, and the obvious parallels between the main protagonist's monotonous personal life and her job as a door-to-door encyclopaedia salesperson.

Where the film scores rather more highly is in its depiction of the smug complacency of the contemporary French bourgeoisie. It does have a few moments of genuine poignancy; and there's also a beautifully handled scene in which Coesens uncertainly removes her dowdy Monoprix clothing with all the enthusiasm of someone being fitted for a surgical corset, while at the same time conveying jittery surges of sexual anticipation with nothing more than a half-smile and a tilt of the head. Like The Dreamlife of Angels from the same stable, this film is perhaps best considered as a fairly easy analysis of personal and social relationships (leavened with some occasional bonking). --Roger Thomas

2.0 out of 5 stars What is Le Secret ?, 10 Mar 2006
By A Customer
The sex scenes are pretty good but the story line is rather turgid (wife with young child not getting enough sex with her husband looks around & decides to have fling with a hunky American dance instructer). Too much of boring family life not enough excitement.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not just a question of boredom, 21 Jan 2009
Le Secret is not a mediocre movie. You just love it or hate it. The acting is great, the storyline is involving and the end leaves a door open to several conclusions. This film is about life and not a about comforting a self-indulgent audience. It is about love and its multiple changes; being afraid of time passing and not being able to find fulfillment; loss of passion and struggling against your own guilty pleasures. It is about what happens frequently with many couples but anybody is willing to face.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good movie about extra-marital relationships, 11 May 2009
By B. Luciano (Italy) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With very good sex scenes; maybe one of the films with the best erotic scenes, which are surely the better part of this movie.

This DVD edition however certainly isn't the best: the audio is both in english and french as in the original movie. I hoped to find an all dubbed english version.
Also the subs are in english, hardcoded (you can't turn them off) and only for when the dialogue is in french.
And it's not widescreen but letterboxed, and the picture quality seems that of a twenty or more years ago movie.
