These performances transport us from the work that marked Frank Bridge's arrival as an orchestral composer in 1904--the symphonic poem Mid of the Night--through to the familiar, fabulous Enter Spring from 1927. The fact that the over-extended Mid of the Night receives only its second-ever performance on CD is not especially surprising, but it certainly highlights the ambition of the 25-year-old Bridge. His passion for Tchaikovsky is evident both here and in the altogether more engaging and coherent symphonic poem Isabella--a tale of love, murder and a ghostly apparition based on Keats/Boccaccio. (Isabella's love theme is a must-hum.) The Two Poems for Orchestra date from the Great War and reveal Bridge exploring a new, more personal musical language while Enter Spring shows him in mature style, a master orchestrator. The BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Richard Hickox impress throughout, the performances suggesting none of the rehearse-record qualities that can afflict recordings of less-familiar repertoire. Always there's shape and direction. Enter Spring is especially fine, possessed of drive and passion, the magical quiet moments beautifully caught. No cloying English pastoral, this. It's fresh as paint. The detail of Bridge's orchestration is matched by a typically transparent Chandos recording, from Swansea's Brangwyn Hall. This is a series to watch.--Andrew Green
