Superb quality colour output and automatic double-sided printing makes the HP Deskjet 980cxi Colour Printer a versatile and attractive proposition. The print engine in the 980cxi is HP's impressive 1,200 by 2,400 dpi Photoret II engine. This produces superb results with crisp and vibrant colour output. The high-resolution modes do take a bit of time to print and consume a fair amount of ink but the results are incredibly life-like. Running in less demanding modes, the 980cxi proved respectably speedy. One of the main features of the 980cxi is double-sided printing. One side is printed and then the paper is reversed and the other side printed automatically. This saves you considerable amount of paper and helps reduce the thick wads of documents that single-sided printing produces. Despite this ability the 980cxi is still a respectably compact and neat design. There's a one-touch cancel button; if you don't realise that this is handy, you soon will. There's also a low ink indicator and an automatic paper type sensor which detects what type of paper you are using and selects the print mode to suit, which saves a lot of experimentation, adjustments and mistakes. It also manages to be reasonably quiet for an inkjet. You get HP's excellent "Getting Started CD-ROM", which takes you through every aspect of installing and using your printer, and a decent selection of software to get you going. The 980cxi is aimed at office as well as home use. It can employ large capacity ink cartridges and is sturdy enough to cope with office life. There's a decent 8 MB print buffer and a 96 MHz RISC chip to process print jobs. The 980cxi is an ideal printer for those who plan a pretty high level of printing work but don't want to compromise on the quality of the results. --Miles Berkeley

It has Universal Serial Bus (USB) capability. USB is a peripheral bus specification that provides Plug and Play capability to computer peripherals. Printers that connect to a computer through USB are automatically configured as soon as they are attached, without the need to reconfigure the computer or restart. HP presents ColorSmart III technology. HP ColorSmart III allows the printer to automatically deliver sharper, clearer, more vivid output. The printer also features Automatic Paper Type Sensor. The printer will automatically determine what type of paper is being used and adjust the print mode appropriately.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews   27 of 27 people found the following review helpful: 3.0 out of 5 stars quiet, functional but not a photo printer, 8 Nov 2001 By  "mum_at_work" - See all my reviews what pleased me most about this machine was its speed and the relative quiet when it is printing compared to my old epson. it also has an x button to hit when you suddenly realise that you are printing all 500 pages instead of the one page you need from a document. it also prints graphics reliably, without the banding that my last two epsons consistently developed at the ends of their lives. the design of its feeding tray means it occupies a smaller area of your desk than an epson. but a photo printer this is not - the colours inevitably emerge bleached - i always end up adjusting print settings to darken and add more contrast. also, black and white photos on photo paper come out in shades of blue grey with no true blacks. my disappointment at this was so great that i resolved next time, to buy a photo printer - never mind the slowness and expense of the cartridges! After it had been installed for about 2 weeks we noticed that when it had not be in use for a couple of hours and we started printing again there were large blobs of ink over the print area. on inspection we found that when at rest the ink was seeping from the cartridge. Our IT engineer came and cleaned it down and made some adjustments. That was fine for about a week but alass the same thing happend again. This time they replaced it same with the model. This is the model that we use at work, with excellent results, both in colour and black and white. Also I am pleased with the quietness of the model. I thoroughly recommend it.
