5.0 out of 5 stars discours des passions, 27 Feb 2006
Marcello (B - not A who wrote a couple of decent oboe concerti and that's about it..) is a fascinating figure. Not only did he write some extraordinary Psalms (hard to get hold of once six were on Dhm but never on CD...) he was perhaps (with Berlioz) the best writer-composer. His Teatro della Moda is the funniest skit on 18th cent. Venetian theatrical life that in places seems to have been penned by Sterne. Anyhow this is a strange anthology of Cantatas based on the theme of leavetaking splendidly performed and enunciated (ah, the Italians are AT LAST getting their act together for their own music so one can savour the words). (Try track FOUR for starters) instruments elaborated marshalled. Like Vivaldi for the ears in its nearness to Venice’s heart (though doesn’t sound like Vivaldi – far less run of the mill than the latter’s opera arias). Pity there’s not more of M. available. (the Bellanziani by the same wonderfully entitled group on Tactus is also extremely rewarding – not always the case with this label…)
