Amazon.co.uk Review
It's been some time since Billy Mahonie attempted to reinvest the dry complexities of instrumental post-rock with some old-fashioned rock power on 1999's acclaimed debut
The Big Dig. Since then, the British quartet have turned heavier, sharper--looking back to the age when rock monsters such as
Black Sabbath and
Zeppelin roamed the earth, along with their beloved
Slint and
Rodan records. The result is a multifaceted, maverick record that never loses sight of a basic need to entertain. Opening track "Fishing with a Man for a Shark" boasts a riff worthy of
Rainbow, "Nacho Steals From Work" keeps the pace going at a blistering speed, but later tracks such as "False Calm" (a simple solo acoustic folk guitar) and the shimmering, laidback "Lothe" reveal a surprisingly sensitive side. Post-rock can occasionally sound dull to the untrained ear--an accusation one could never level at Billy Mahonie. --
