4.0 out of 5 stars Steppin' - The Pointer Sisters, 14 Jul 2007
By craiguito (Birmingham, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Steppin' (Audio CD)
Before the synth-pop trio that hit the charts in the mid-80s, the Pointer Sisters were a funky foursome, with music styles ranging from doo-wop to Country & Western. Released in 1975, this was the sisters' 3rd studio album , and and one of the most overlooked- a shame since this is one of their funkiest, and contains their first R n B chart number 1 - How Long (Betcha Got A Chick on The Side) - written by the band.
With this album, the girls seemed to be breaking away from their 1940s style jazz styles of their first 2 albums, (apart from a great Duke Ellington medley - 'I Ain't Got Nothin But The Blues'). This album has something for everyone, and includes instrumental and lyrical contributions from Stevie Wonder (Sleeping Alone), Isaac Hayes (Easy Days), Taj Mahal (Chainey Do) and Allen Toussaint (Goin' Down Slowly). This album gives the listener a taster of the girls at the height of their funky best!
