Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Hilary Hahn is not only one of the best but one of the most interesting young violinists before the public. Even as a teenager, she seemed uninterested in displaying her formidable technical mastery, concentrating instead on the music with a seriousness far beyond her years. Now 21, she has become a thoughtful, knowledgeable musician and an arresting, involved performer. Both qualities are reflected on this recording, beginning with the choice of the two concertos, which are entirely dissimilar--except for being in the same key--yet make an excellent pair, and extending to the programme notes, which blend personal reminiscence and scholarly research. As for the playing, it is extraordinary. Technical difficulties do not exist; even the most daunting passages, like the infamous G-major section in the Finale of the Brahms, or the wild running-around in the Stravinsky, are dispatched with perfect clarity and consummate, effortless ease. Hahn's tone is intense, focused, variable, and of pristine purity in all registers, at all dynamic levels. She never loses her sense of meter or direction, her phrases have shape and elegance, and she needs no external effects and hardly slides. Her playing is austere and controlled, with an inward, noble expressiveness. In the Brahms, the high soaring passages are ecstatic, the Finale is quite fast and very strict, only the Joachim cadenza is almost too free. Altogether, this is a most impressive achievement. --Edith Eisler

3.0 out of 5 stars Great virtouso let down by timid accompaniment, 26 April 2002
By A Customer
The violinist Hilary Hahn has is one of the great violinists of her day and has been in high demand in the UK ever since her debut at the Proms (on the last night) and her feature in BBC Music Magazine. It was with great anticipiation that I learned she was to be recording the Stravinsky and Brahms concertos with a British orchestra. However, upon listening to the CD I was greatly disappointed by the standard of the orchestral accompaniment - some of the worst I have heard. Marriner's Stravinsky is restrained and the timbre too dark for the vibrant interpretation of Hahn. The ensemble-work in the massive homophonic passages is not entirely together and the individual contributions from some members of the orchestra in the Brahms is such a let-down. The most painful example of this is the oboe solo in the Adagio. Probably the most famous in the repertoire for oboists, the Academy principle produces a thin tone with too much bulging and very little legato; a complete contradiction to the wonderful soaring lines that Hahn produces. I've recently reverted back to my Anne-Sophie Mutter and Berlin Phil ercording, but it's with great frustration that I do so. Hahn's performance is of the highest calibre and deserves so much better and on a label like Sony Classical one would expect better.

5.0 out of 5 stars FIve stars for Hahn but let down by Marriner, 7 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Hilary Hahn is a quite awesome talent, her Brahms playing is lyrical and passionate and her performance is up there with the most illustrious names in the history of violin playing .

Sadly the orchestral contribution is tepid and earthbound Marriner is all too often a disappointment in these great romantic works

The Stravinsky is better ASMF being more used to its smaller scale and spiky accompaniment whilst Hahn is incomparable - this is probably the finest recording of this work .

5.0 out of 5 stars Hahn the performer, 4 Aug 2009

I HAVE hAHN'S RECORDINGS ON CD OF THE sCHOENBERG, THE bRAHMS,THE Stravinsky, the Sibelius and her Plays Bach album. She has developed into an artist of consummate ability. All thes works are excellent but the Stravinsky and the Brahms are sublime.HerbRAHMS IS NOT DISSIMILAR TO szeryings which a I have on vinyl and which has always been on of my absolute favourites.Ms Hahn is clearly in the big league and is becoming internationally recognised as a player of the highest order.Have a look at her website.Acompete lack of pretentiousness and great warmth seem also to be amongst her trademarks. Why oh why does she not release her recordings on vinyl wher we could hear what she does in the best medium when played on the proluferation of higfh quality equipment which is available now? That said, she is simply wonderful.Buy her recordings, you'll love them all.
