Amazon.co.uk Review

For such a boldly titled and apparently driven attempt to reinstate Michael Jackson at the centre of the pop world, Invincible is a listless thing. Split between scratchy funk workouts and mid-tempo ballads that might have appeared as Bad B-sides, the album plays on and on while never seriously promoting dancing or romancing. Its handful of weird moments--the resurrection-by-tape of Biggie Smalls on the bridge of the title track, for instance--are hardly large-scale bizarre like the first disc of HIStory. The title track turns out to be hardly the rampant ego-fest you'd imagine; instead, its subject is a female whom Jackson cheers on. Likewise, the most ear-catching moments of the "comeback" single "You Rock My World" come with Chris Tucker's jivey introduction. Despite a debt to "Payback"-era James Brown, "Rock" floats away like steam midway through. It's almost a relief when the old self-regard turns up: on the growling "Privacy", Jackson rants about muckrakers "stalking" him in search of "the stories you need to bury me", all this long after foundering divas and troubled boy-group members have replaced him on tabloid covers. The man may occasionally break away from the mirror, but he seems unsure about where else to find inspiration. --Rickey Wright

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Underrated Album, 8 Aug 2003
By pilate101 (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I've been a fan of Michael Jackson's music for years. However, my first impression of this album wasn't that good. But over the last year since I decided to buy it, it has really really grown on me. Even with NO PROMOTION BY SONY MUSIC! A much underrated album is what we have here.

UNBREAKABLE: This is a good track overall. The beat and staccato lyrics are all catchy, as well as Mike's message. I like the little "ha." he does halfway through. The rap piece fits in nicely. 5/5

HEARTBREAKER: Another up-tempo, staccato/R&B type track like "Unbreakable," faster though. This is the stronger of the 2 tracks in my opinion. Good breaks, rhythm. 5/5

INVINCIBLE: This 3rd track sounds similar to "Unbreakable" musically once again. It has the same tempo and style. It's the shorter one of the 2 previous. I like this song the same as the previous two and I actually can't decide which the better. Another rap solo, which I think is the best on the album. 5/5

BREAK OF DAWN: Tempo change to a soulful love ballad. It's a very strong ballad, and one of a few on the album. This one stands out more than some of the other ballads. Even has little birdie sounds in the background and the beginning of the song is so beautiful and has to be heard to be believed. 4/5

HEAVEN CAN WAIT: Again, same as "Break of Dawn," I like the intro music the most. This is a lovely ballad. Mike's voice is very nice and sweet on this one. Nice theme for a love song, not as original as others but it is excellent. This might even have been an R&B hit if released as a single. 5/5

YOU ROCK MY WORLD: If you haven't heard this song by now then, SHAME ON YOU!!! This track was Michael's comeback song chosen by Sony Music, and I can't understand why they (Sony Music) didn't release it in America, it was a sure #1. Anyway, it is one of the best tracks Michael has ever done, and also one of the best on the album. It sounds sort of like a song The Jackson 5 would do, very catchy chorus, great unforgettable R&B song, it should be listened to. 5/5

BUTTERFLIES: One more stand out ballad. His voice here again is very nice sounding. It's a good mid-tempo R&B ballad that doesn't drag on forever. I like it, it really relaxes you. 5/5

SPEECHLESS: This is a very beautiful song. It could have been a hit single I believe. The music and background vocals are all great. It's my personal favourite ballad on the album. It's a very fine way to end the "first half" of the album. 5/5

2000 WATTS: A very dark sounding track, but I mean that in a good way. Mike's voice is so deep! Why hasn't he ever sounded like this before? You've never heard an MJ track like this one, it is unique. Great track for the clubs and dancing. I like it! Imagine if this was released as a single, I would love to hear what people would think!!! 4/5

YOU ARE MY LIFE: Another great song ballad, its very sweet sounding. Apparently this was written about his children. That alone makes it a very nice song. It sounds a lot like his pervious no #1 hit, "You Are Not Alone," off of the HIStory album in 1995. I like it! 3.5/5

PRIVACY: Mike's venting at the media once again and I don't blame him. One thing I love about this one is that he mentions Diana and "stories that have been twisted and turned." That for me is a great thing as he's letting people know what really is going on behind there backs to celebrities, I also love the chorus, it really gets you in an angry mood with the media and back stabbing press when you listen to this song, also it's very catchy. There's a guitar solo by Slash in here that I like, and goes really well. This is my favourite track on the whole album. 5/5

DON"T WALK AWAY: Track 12, and the sixth ballad. Overall, it's a very nice sounding song. It is one of my preferred ballads on the whole album and has a sudden ending too. In the song Michaels talks about his two run away wife's and how much it has affected him, which is good for the song because you can tell he really means what he is saying. 4/5

CRY: This song is fantastic, the best ballad on the album. It does have a strong message about life and changing the world. It's a lot like his pervious hits, "Heal The World" and "Man In The Mirror," but much better. You have to hear this one; the song really puts you in a trance!!! 5/5

THE LOST CHILDREN: A very peaceful, thoughtful song. Clips of his children playing are a nice touch. Good song, and the guitar or whatever sounds very nice. 3.5/5

WHATEVER HAPPENS: This is very cool laid back song. The guitar music of Carlos Santana makes this a great track. I think it could have been a hit single if it was released. 5/5

THREATENED: This is a very interesting track to end the album with. Great clips of Rod Sterling, "Twilight Zone" intro/outro. It's got a very catchy music tone and beat. I like the chorus when mike sings, "you should be threatened by me," that really sends shivers done my spine. It has a sort of "Thriller," and "Beat It" feels to it.

Amazingly, I've found know weak tracks on this album. There are certainly top quality songs on this album worth checking out. I would defiantly recommend you buy this album, you will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars The King of Pop is back, 5 Nov 2001
'Brilliant' is the one word that I would describe to summon up Michael's long awaited new album 'Invincible'.

After listening to the album a few times, the one main thing I noticed is that there is not one bad song on this album. This is quite an achievement when you consider Michael has around around for 30+ years. Other elders like Elton John don't have the same stance on their music as they use to have, Michael still does.

Ok, History was non-special, blood on the dance floor was terrible but at last, Jacko fans have news that they have been waiting for...he is back to near his very best.

The first 3 songs on the album are all high tempo, groovy tunes which perhaps gives the listener a false perception of what is to come as the album also contains a load of soft tempo and beautiful ballads.

After these 3 tunes, we start to enter the Jackson territory of ballads that no-one to this day can beat him on. Break of dawn and Heaven can wait are excellent tunes that have me singing to all day.

The album continues with the high standard production with other soon-to-be classics Butterflies, You are my life, Cry and Whatever happens.

If I have to criticise the album, I would say:

1- The first 3 songs should have been dispersed around the album better. Having three up tempo tunes together, we find 4 slow ballads together later on as well. Mix it up, Michael!

2- Perhaps too many ballads on the album. It would have been better to have more tunes like Whatever happens and You rock my world which have a faster beat with an R+B edge to it.

3- He shouldn't have released You rock my world as a first single: there are far better tracks!

However, its a 5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complicated, Sophisticated album, 3 Nov 2001
By A Customer
As a music reviewer I try to give a fair and un-biased opinion of the music whether I like or loathe the artist. Invincible is an album that HAS to be "listened" to, to be fully appreciated. In a way this is a slight disadvantage, since it appeals much more to those who have a "musical ear" and who understand the way music is put together. On first listening, or to the "un-trained ear" it is true that some tracks may go "over the head", but such is MJ's talent that what you first hear is far from the whole picture. Invincible is a highly complex and truly "musical" album full of the trademark discordant chords, complicated rythmns, subtle key and major/minor changes and juxtyposing harmonies. The most musically interesting tracks include "invincible", "unbreakable", "break of dawn", "butterflies", and "whatever happens". The most aesthetically pleasing (and saleable) include the likes of "speechless", & "cry". If you listen carefully with "open ears" you will find that whenever you expect the music to go one way, it inevitabley goes the other, this is a hallmark and much underrated feature of MJ's work - evident from the earliest albums.
Invincible marks an entrance to new territory for MJ. Sure there are the classic "get back at the tabloids tracks" ("Privacy") and the "children tracks" ("lost children"), and these may be used as amunition by those who wish to challenge his position as an innovator. But surely these are private tracks, not saleable ones, they are a means to express feelings in the only way MJ knows how - by song. Invincible IS a much more sophistcated album by MJ & if time is taken to listen and appreciate it, without being coloured by the many derogatory comments about the artist, you will see why.
To compare Invincible to the likes of Thriller & Bad before it is premature, it is time to turn our attentions to the present (isn't that what some critics say about MJ?!) Those albums were made almost 20 years ago - yes that's right 20 years ago! Whether you like him or not, the fact that people still talk about him (positively OR negatively) all these years later is a testament to the extraordinary impact MJ has had on the music industry.
