Amazon.co.uk Review

The 1994 movie Stargate was originally intended as the start of a franchise, but creators Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin were distracted celebrating their Independence Day. Episodic TV treatment was the natural next step. In the roles of Colonel Jack O'Neill and Dr Daniel Jackson respectively are Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks. They're joined by Captain Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) and guilt-stricken former alien baddie Teal'c (Christopher Judge) to form the teacher's-pet primary unit SG-1. With a seemingly endless network of Stargates found to exist on planets all across the known universe, their mission is to make first contact with as many friendly races as possible. Chasing their heels at almost every turn are the "overlord" Goa'uld--the ancient Egyptian Gods who are none too chummy after the events of the original film. There's something of The Time Tunnel to the show's premise, but Stargate has held its own with stories that put the science fiction back into TV sci-fi.

On the DVD: Episodes: Double Jeopardy and Exodus. In "Double Jeopardy", SG-1 experiences a bogus journey when they're reunited with their robot doppelgangers (from "Tin Man"). Some welcome resolution is given to their separate story line, since they'd basically been left to fend for themselves. The split-screen effects are excellent allowing the actors to interact with themselves. This was the directorial debut of Michael Shanks (Dr Jackson). The big Season Four finale had a lot of continuity to pull together before allowing our heroes their "Exodus". Sam gets to spend more time with her Tokra father than has been possible while everything disintegrates around them. While Teal'c goes out of his way to avenge the death of an old lover (how many wives has he had?), the unveiling of Earth's most recently acquired piece of technology seems to turn the tide of battle against the Goa'uld. And then all is lost. Including them.--Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, 13 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Double Jeopardy is Michael Shanks' directorial debut, and he does a fabulous job. The episode itself is fast-paced, with excellent SFX and characterisations. The 2 O'Neills adds comedy and the death of the Jackson copy is dealth with remarkably well.
Exodus is also great for anyone who is looking for action, and finally shows Jack & Daniel with some of their old interaction. Very refreshing and infinitely pleasing after season 4's division of the 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars SG-1 at its absolute best (again), 4 Nov 2001
By A Customer
The two episodes on this DVD represent Stargate SG-1 at its absolute best. "Double Jeopardy" is an action packed, adventure showing the welcome return of the robot doubles and the always funny Harlan. "Exodus" the season four finale is absolutely brilliant with a brilliant blend of action, comedy and drama. Particularly funny are the interactions between O'Neill and Jackson and the ending is a very good cliff hanger. A must have for any SG-1 fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent episodes, extras full of spoilers, 24 Mar 2002
Really good episodes at Stargate's best, but I really hate it when the extras are filled with spoilers from the next season.
I will have to wait until I've seen the entire season 5 to see these extras, as I hate things to be given away in advance.

They certainly could have included some interesting extras about the production of season 4 instead.

It's also not justified to charge full price for half the product.

This is the reason for the 3 stars, else it would have gotten 5.

Does no one else have a problem with the fact that there are only two episodes on this DVD? I love this series, I really do. Read more
