Shadow Run ought to be considerably more interesting than it is--Geoffrey Reeve is an efficient director and both Michael Caine and James Fox turn in icy performances as, respectively, an almost completely ruthless thief and the renegade intelligence man who hires him for that one last big job. Caine in particular is convincing in the half-hearted attacks of compunction that never stop him killing obstacles. Many of the bit-players--Lesley Grantham, for example--do a lot with almost nonexistent parts. The film counterpoints the planning of the heist with the social embarrassments of the fat schoolboy who becomes, by a series of coincidences, too informed about it and, ultimately, Caine's secret sharer. Reeve is rather too in love with the cathedral school background of the subplot and skimps too much on the complicated technical business of getting a computerised security van into a radio blackout zone. Still, the boy is excellent, and Caine's affair with the doomed hooker Rae Baker has some much-needed moments of wit.

On the DVD: Disappointingly, the DVD, whose Dolby surround sound does miracles for the scenes of schoolboy choristers, is presented in pan and scan 1.33:1, and has no extra features except for chapter selection and trailers for other films.--Roz Kaveney

I spent most of this film either sitting with my mouth open in shock or hiding behind a cushion. Not because the film was so tense and horrifyingly violent but because I was amazed that anyone thought they could pass it off as watchable and I was embarrassed for everyone who had taken part. I love Michael Caine more than anything and I wanted to enjoy Shadow Run because he was in it, but I ended up feeling sorry for him as he plodded through this shallow, sub-standard shambles.
The actors' performances were as unbelievable as the plot. I didn't care about any of the characters and certainly didn't care whether Joffrey sang in the choral competition. The only emotion he evoked was sadness that Haskell didn't bump him off as well. The characters spoke to give you cliched information and all remained two dimensional. Even Dirty Den was rubbish. I can't even remember the name of Haskell's prostitute hand-around because she was so pointless. James Fox's character did annoy me but this was due to James Fox not being able to speak properly.
The public school storyline of singing, social exclusion and fat Walter Mittys detracted from the planning of the shadow run heist rather than complementing it and meant that neither storyline got enough attention, which is good in a way because I couldn't have stood any more footage of stage school pratts speaking in their best posh voices.
The production values were poor and it looked like it had been thrown together last thing on a Friday afternoon. I couldn't tell whether some scenes seemed such non sequiturs due to a bad script or bad continuity.
I only sat through the whole thing because I thought it had to get better but it didn't. In fact, I think it actually got worse. And it ripped off Get Carter. In a bad way. So don't bother.

You would think by now that Michael Caine would pick and choose the scripts he gets sent. Judging by this rubbish it would appear not.
secound rate acting from a cast that could have done so much better. Leslie Grantham has a small role but manages to steal the show, but the let down is basically you can see where corners have been cut with things like supposed to be state of the art security vans which just happen to be sprayed up transits from the late eighties. All these minor things show, even the fact that half the criminal gang dont speak a word. This is because if an actor speaks you have to pay them more.
Not just the worst film our Michaels ever made but highly embarrasing for him as well. Another thing, can someone tell James Fox to keep his eyebrows still when talking.

I hate to say it but .... apart from Leslie Grantham's brief appearance, this film is rubbish. I could go into details but it would take too long for you to read the negative comments I would be writing.
