Amazon.co.uk Review

The title says it all... Creating Patterns is noodle jazz for head-nodders. 4 Hero were at their peak at the start of the 1990s when they pioneered drum & bass, breaking all the musical rules with outstanding albums such as Parallel Universe and the patronage of up-and-coming artists such as Goldie and Nookie. Now the energy seems to have departed from the London twosome Dego and Mark Mac. On their fourth album they've retreated into the soft confines of electronic slush jazz, far removed from the gravity defying drum & bass classics such as "Journey From the Light". 4 Hero are taking over Incognito's role at Talkin' Loud records, producing polite dinner muzak with a modern day electronic twist. Even the presence of Jill Scott on "Another Day" can't raise the song-writing level above bland. 4 Hero have got too hooked up on being "serious" which means employing 16 piece string sections and Terry Callier. Much as they probably hate the thought, 4 Hero were best when they wanted to tear down the system with tracks like "Mr Kirk's Nightmare" rather than their ever-increasing desire to conform to what they believe is proper music. We need them to mess things up again. --Jake Barnes

CD Description

From their beginnings in the early UK rave scene, 4 Hero have been pushing back the breakbeat boundries. 'Creating Patterns' continues with their mix of jazz, drum 'n' bass and twisted soundscapes. A re-working of Minnie Ripperton's 'Les Fleurs' is also included.

4.0 out of 5 stars ac dc, 8 Nov 2001
By A Customer
this album has a dual nature .there are some really good tracks and there are some mediocre trakcs. now this should not come as a great surprise to those who have heard their last album 2 pages.meaning that first page was propably the most beautiful piece of recorded music this side of miles davis's sketches of spain.and second page full of mediocre drum and bass.that duality is more pronounced on creating patterns because there is only one cd and 13 tracks on it ,the really excellent tracks like ,time, les fleurs and others with live instruments are far superior to those with only programmend beats and stuff. but none the less the tracks that are good are very very good indeed .of the musicians on the record i especially love drummer luke parkhouse and bassist andy hamill, their palying lifts the music to breath taking hights. but alas i really do not like those tracks that are mainly produced by dego, sorry but i cant help it. all in all even with these misgivings i rate this album very higly. remember even diamonds have rough edges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marc & Dego triumph again........, 6 Nov 2001
If you bought 'Two Pages' and loved it then don't bother reading any reviews just buy 'Creating Patterns' - you really won't regret it. For those who didn't, this release further highlights 4hero's ability to create beautiful soundscapes using both synthesizers and live instruments, including a creative use of strings that has become 4hero's trademark. Certain tracks appear to be heavily influenced by the production talents of Charles Stepney and his work for Cadet in the late sixties and early seventies (included here is a cover of Minnie Ripperton's classic 'Les Fleurs', if you can still find it try to find 4hero's interpretation of Rotary Connection's 'I am the black gold of the sun'; both originals were Stepney productions). Certain frustrations are vented by those who remember early 4hero releases as having a harder, more industrial sound and their recent work as being watered down versions of past glories. I have followed 4hero avidly since they released their Jacob's Optical Stairway project in the mid-nineties, which began to move away from the 'instant fix' club format of drum & bass and move towards the more intelligent side of electronic music production. I was initially aware of their earlier releases as 4hero (The Scorcher, Mr Kirk's nightmare etc...) and Manix as they struck a chord with my tendencies for hardcore raving in the late 80s & early 90s; fusing that sound with hip-hop beats (my first love). However, possibly due to my musical tastes maturing, this release and '2 Pages' really are masterpieces in my mind. I cannot understand why 4hero have not achieved more commercial success as they easily equal & better the Likes of Air, Groove Armada, Zero 7 etc. - maybe it's due to less aggressive marketing strategies. This release reflects inner city life in 2001 and (maybe I'm taking this too far!), 4hero have provided a soundtrack for my life in clubs and bars for the last decade or so. I really feel strongly about their music and encourage anyone who enjoys music in general to give it a good listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 26 Feb 2002

As the title suggests, brilliant, although it might take a little while for the ears to tune in to the harmonies / subtle intricacies. This music is most certainly not simplistic at the best of times, and if someone can appreciate more demanding music and is prepared to give it time, when it all comes together it really does. Different approach to '2 Pages' but yet with some similarities! Some of the techno tracks on this (Dego's creations) like especially '8' I find a bit bizarre and lacking in musicality, but on the whole most is superb. 'Time' with Ursula Rucker, 'Golden Solitude', 'Another Day', 'Les Fleur', many classic tracks within. Tuff, funky, soulful music with a very contemporary approach - looking behind and to the present musically to create future landscapes. Definitely not weak as some might suggest. I'm very happy with this, but expected no less of 4 Hero anyway!
