Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
He's remixed U2 and Massive Attack, designed sleeves for Eric B & Rakim and the Jungle Brothers, runs his own record imprint Output and now, under his nom de plume Playgroup, Trevor Jackson has made a classic record that pulls the disco rug from under Daft Punk's feet, without resorting to robot masks, irony, or really terrible guitar solos. Actually, in truth, Playgroup is a record that makes a spirit of eclecticism its central tenet, mashing funk, punk, hip-hop and new-wave into a funky whole, with guests including everyone from bequiffed Scottish crooner Edwin Collins and Happy Mondays' Rowetta to Le Tigre's Kathleen Hanna and Blurt saxophonist Ted Milton. But throughout, the mood is joyfully upbeat and permanently angled towards the dance floor--from the characteristically Princely sleaze-funk of "Number One", sung by Leila cohort Luca, to the odd wildcard, such as the dominatrix disco of "Make It Happen" or the deep boombox-dub rumble of "Surface to Air", peppered cheekily with mobile phone interference. Jackson can even make Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Love" sound cool, reworking it with juddering dancehall bass, Jamaican toaster Shinehead at the helm. In a scene blighted by irony and cliché, Playgroup is a refreshingly original statement: Trevor Jackson really is doing it for the kids. -- Louis Pattison

5.0 out of 5 stars Now Thats What I Call Real Music, 16 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Playgroup (Audio CD)
I cannot recommend this album enough; it slipped out towards the end of last year and somehow managed to escape all the usual media hype - and the end of year music polls, which really is a sad reflection upon music magazines. Every man and his dog have ranted on about the retro-chic joys of Daft Punk and The Avalanches, yet Trevor Jackson has quietly created the best dance album in years.

Whilst drawing on traditional influences as diverse as funk, punk, disco, hip hop and reggae the album is still so amazingly fresh and modern its makes you wonder why so many dance producers get it so terribly wrong. Every part of this album, from the collaborations to the packaging, is absolutely spot on.

The only negative thing that I could say about this album is that it makes most other dance music being released at the moment look like total bobbins!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like green flash it pumps., 21 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I bought this album because the cover caught my eye and after one listen it certainly caught my ears too. With a little bit of princey funk, a little of nouvelle cuisine, a little bit of savoir faire and little Parisian charm, each track is certainly aimed to get the dancefloor going and is extremely uplifting without heading down cheesey street. If this doesn't get your green flash pumping get your ears syringed. From start to finish the rolling bass keeps you pounding and twisting like a slippery eel. Certainly one of the albums of the year that oozes originality from every pour.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, 30 Mar 2004
This review is from: Playgroup (Audio CD)
Please ignore the critics of this album - whilst perhaps not being the most complex of albums - the simplicity of the tunes and the undoubted "fun" factor present throughout combine to make this one of the most enjoyable "feelgood" albums that i have come across in recent time. most tunes grow with each additional listen and i defy anybody to not let the fantastic basslines put a smile on their face!
