5.0 out of 5 stars Precious document of Richter at the hight of his power, 4 Mar 2008
By Scriabinmahler (Cambridge UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I hope that not many people get put off by the negative review and miss out the opportunity to know how formidable a pianist Richter was in 60s. I myself used to be very fussy about sound quality, applause or coughs etc and ignored the great pianist for too long when I started to collect CDs in 80s, and how I regret that now! Especially because now I know most of Richter's best performances come from live recordings.

If you consider the poor recording quality of Carnegie Hall Recital 6CD set by Doremi, this RCA 2CD set is a treasure to own, which includes wide variety of works to reveal Richter's formidable and astonishingly rich pianism at the hight of his artistic maturity. Audience's applause is hardly a reason to refuse the performances of such depth and force. Ovation rather adds to the excitement and the sense of historic occasion. You can sense the degree of sensation Richter caused during his visit to US. Recording quality itself is far better than other Carnegie Hall recordings by Richter.

3.0 out of 5 stars A disc too far?, 27 Feb 2003
A live recital from Richter during his 1960 debut in America which is very well recorded and as you would expect features excellent playing from the master. So what's the problem? Well it's a recital and encores from 26/12/60 and also the encores from another recital two days later. The second disc, apart from a sparkling Prokofiev 6th contains only encores. Well I say only encores, which wouldn't be such a problem, but you also have to suffer an awful lot of applause. He begins by encoring Prokofievs Visions Fugitive, 10 of them, but as they're encores, and of very short pieces, the audience doesn't quite know, it seems, when to applaud; so it's a stop start affair. We then go straight into the encores from the second concert, again a collection of short pieces, a typical encore in fact, but the same problem again. With disc two you're listening to almost as much applause as you are Richter, it's bad enough the first time you listen to it but on repeat! Far better would have been an edited single concert or preferably, a more listener friendly filler, he did play 7 concerts in all. As it stands I think a 2 for 1 pricing would be the only acceptable way of marketing this, wonderful at times, collection. If you want to look elsewhere you could do a lot worse than his Prokofiev disc on Praga which contains an absolutely electric 6th, though less well recorded. As for the Haydn, well it's hardly a replacement but Brendel on Philips live from Salzburg.
