Amazon.co.uk Review
Thumb Wars is a parody of Star Wars in which all the characters are played by real human thumbs with equally real human eyes and mouths grafted onto them through the wonders of computerised image tweakery. Obvious, really. If you're a fan of the toy and puppets dramas on The Adam and Joe Show or, frankly, even if you're not, you'll love this. Quite apart from the inherent wonderful silliness of mastermind Steve Oedekerk's creations, the mickey-taking is of a high order as Loke Groundrunner, Hand Duet and Princess Bunhead, aided by Oobedoob Benubi, battle the forces of the evil Thumbpire (the stormtroopers wear thimbles) in order to destroy the "big dangerous weapon thing that can blow stuff up".

Along the way, Luke and Oobedoop replay Bunhead's holographic message while lying on the floor so they can look up her dress, the two robots have sex and Hand Duet insists on being paid in girly giggles. The eventual destruction of the "big dangerous weapon thing" will have you in stitches, with Groundrunner attempting to use "the power of the Thumb" while the spirit of Oobedoob urges him to "use the instrument panel, Luke--that's what it's there for". --Roger Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars the best star wars spoof since spaceballs, 29 Dec 2002

This review is from: Thumb Wars [DVD] [1999] (DVD)
i bought this without seeing the "film" (29 minutes long) first, and was skeptical of a feature film involving thumbs, but i was pleasantely surprised with the very funny result.
it is written by the guy that made 'Patch Adams' and 'Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls', so as you can see this isn't some small project by a little known writer who doesn't know the ins and outs of the movie business.

you just have to look at the cover of the box to see how seriously funny this show is, and how it can poke fun at Star Wars.

The film is basically set to the main them of the original Star Wars film ('A New Hope'), with added parts of 'The Empire Strikes Back' film in aswell.

The story starts with the Thumbpire's attack ship capturing a Thumbellion ship, carrying the Princess Bunhead onboard.
Black Helmet Man makes an appearance to seek information from her, while the droids escape to the sand planet below.
There they meet up with Loke Groundrunner (Luke Skywalker parody), and some friends who go after the Princess, who holds valuable information on how to destroy the Thumbpire's most deadly weapon, a pardoy of the original Star Wars Death Star, but here its in the shape of a giant thumb.
Along the way Loke meets up with a small green alien called 'Puppet', who is a Thumb Master, and wishes to teach Loke the ways of the Thumb.

Apart from the very funny story, the special effects in the space battle scene's are surprisingly well done, and isn't that far away from the special effects of the new Star Wars films.

All in all, great comedy, and if you're a Star Wars fan you will love this.
Along with the film on the DVD, you can see future 'thumb' projects in the future, of spoofing other films, with trailers for films like 'Bat Thumb' and 'Frankenthumb'.
May the thumb be with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Thumb is strong in this one, 13 April 2009

Steve Oedekerk went all out for his first Thumb filmette, as Thumb Wars features thumbation on an epic scale. In the end, Oedekerk somehow managed to condense the whole Stars War story into less than thirty minutes of incredible animation and humorous dialogue. As a parody, it necessarily makes fun of some of the weaker elements in the Star Wars saga, but I can't imagine even the most die-hard Star Wars groupie not being able to enjoy the heck out of watching Thumb Wars. I don't know how they do the animation, but these thumbs are true characters capable of some great facial expressions. The whole light saber thing doesn't work that well, but some great CGI animation makes all of the space shots look great, especially the battle scenes, and the assembly of appendages hanging out at the alien cantina is not to be missed.

The gang's all here in this one, as Loke Groundrunner leaves his home planet in the company of Oobedoob Benubi and the effeminate droids Prissypeo and Beboobeep to join the Thumbellion. With the help of Hand Duet and Crunchy, our do-gooders manage to rescue Princess Bunhead from the evil clutches of Black Helmet Man and launch an attack on the gigantic, planet-spinning power of the Death Nail. Can they take advantage of the Self Destruct button placed all so conveniently on the Death Nail, or are Loke and his buddies doomed to fail against the might of the Thumbpire? And just what is the secret connection between Loke and Black Helmet Man? It's not necessarily what you think.

Admittedly, I found The Blair Thumb [ 2003 ] + Extra's, the follow-up to this original Thumbation film release, to be funnier than Thumb Wars, but I can still recommend this short, twenty-eight minute filmette to anyone - including my fellow Star Wars fans. You'll be amazed that anyone took such a stupid idea and carried it as far as Steve Oedekerk did - but even that's nothing compared to what he actually accomplished in the end. It doesn't get much weirder than Thumb Wars - but it doesn't get much funnier, either.
