3.0 out of 5 stars Christophe Rousset is a bit hyperactive, 15 Mar 2003
By alastair (london United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Christophe Rousset is technically brilliant and well able to do justice to this extraordinary music - leaping from chord to chord, discord to discord......Rousset describes Forqueray as 'the Franz Liszt of the harpsichord' and he brings that out very well in his performance.

My problem is he's just too hyperactive. Everything is executed at a pace which ranges from energetic to frenetic - faultlessly and with perfect command.....but why? Sometimes it works (La Bellmont) to bring out the drama and movement in the music. But at other times it is just a bit too neurotic.

The biggest disappointment for me on this collection is Forqueray's masterpiece 'Jupiter'. When Sophie Yates performs this on her recording of French Baroque harpsichord Music she captures the dignity of the ruler of Olympus. He is purposeful, commanding, then impatient, then angry. His thunderbolts shoot dreadfully down from heaven. but Rousset's thunderbolts are a joke. Jupiter under his almost impossible nimble fingers sounds as though he is having an attack of St Vitus dance. There is much brilliant racing up and down the keyboard but in the end it sounds like the sound track form Tom and Jerry or the Keystone Cops. If Christophe Rousset had paused for breath every now and then I would have enjoyed his recording more. However it is still by all means worth getting and listening to.
