The Sorrel Quartet capture these pieces to perfection, which is a far from easy task with a composer who so often is not what he seems at first hearing. The best-known work here is No. 8, placed last on the CD, and this is quite possibly where most listeners will begin. I have never heard a better performance - it is gripping from beginning to end, with the many moods beautifully caught and recorded in first-rate sound quality. Nos. 9 and 13 are if anything even better pieces; this is music which needs many hearings to be fully appreciated, and I would urge listeners to do just that - you will be amply repaid for your trouble. Again the Sorrels have obviously thought deeply about this disturbing music, and the performances have all the spontaneity of live music-making together with the accuracy of the recording studio. All in all an excellent disc.
