Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

People who spend a lot of time online should seriously think about installing a personal firewall to protect their PC. Norton Personal Firewall 2002 remains one of the easier CD-ROM firewalls to install and run. This version incorporates new features designed to counteract recent trends in hacking. Most firewalls either stop the bad guys "getting in" or unauthorised software, such as Trojans from "getting out"--NPF does both.

This utility offers relatively simple installation and set up and protects systems from both incoming and outgoing connection attempts. It not only keeps Web sites and hackers from accessing your system, it also won't allow viruses or any other programs to access the Internet without your knowledge. NPF's default Medium security setting blocks any program from accessing the Internet. When a new program tries to access the Internet, a pop-up window asks if you want to permit access. If you choose to save these settings, NPF will remember them every time the same program tries to go online. Eventually, NPF learns which programs you want to access the Internet, and those annoying pop-ups trickle off. However, if you want to configure it for a specific purpose, this remains a complex task, requiring some techie knowledge.

In common with other firewall programs, NPF lets you retrieve program updates from the Web, view how many times outside people or programs have tried to access your system, configure firewall settings (including security levels, Internet access, and port blocking), access the firewall's help files and adjust privacy settings to either Low, Medium, or High. Once installed, it's effective, hiding the most common TCP/IP ports and making them invisible to the outside world.--Roger Gann

Manufacturer's Description

Norton Personal Firewall 2002 keeps hackers out and personal data in. Every minute your computer is online, it's vulnerable to intrusions and the theft of private information. Norton Personal Firewall defends against these threats at multiple levels, without interrupting your work. Right out of the box, it begins to secure your computer by concealing it from hackers. If anyone does attempt to probe your system, such as by scanning its ports, the AutoBlock feature automatically blocks their access.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a superb product!, 16 Jan 2002
By kenshipway@aol.com (Peacehaven, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
It was not until I installed this product on my computer that I realised how easy it can be, when you are online through an ISP, for others to be accessing your computer without you being aware and doing who knows what on it. Since installing I have become not only aware of attempts to access my computer, which are being suitably addressed, but, as time goes on, the attempts are dramatically reducing. What more can anyone say but this has to be one of the best security facilities there is!

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for software incompatibilities, 12 April 2002
By A Customer
This is a great product and continues in the tradion of Symantecs system protection software. However, I find I can't use this product with AOL 7.0 running on Windows XP platform. The dial up works, and AOL's subscriber sites are accessible, but linking to the internet via AOL's browser or Internet Explorer has so far proved to be impossible. AOL's suggested fixes (including regular purging of the browser cache) were ineffective. Bottom line is I have uninstalled Internet security and will cange ISP so I can use it with validated (hopefully) software. Unless AOL / Symantec post a fix, currently, I would advise against AOL 7.0 / XP users purchasing this. Maybe this type of review will prompt some action. Pity, because my long term experience with Symantec products has been good.
