Amazon.co.uk Review

On Blue Horse, their debut CD, three young Canadian songbirds (Frazey Ford, Samantha Parton and Trish Klein) join the neo-trad movement that has given us such notable voices as Iris DeMent and Gillian Welch. But where Welch finds inspiration in the dark hollows and tragic tales of Appalachian music, the Be Good Tanyas seek out sweetness and light, revelling in the interplay of their beautifully trilling voices. Blue Horse is deeply rooted but no exercise in old-time purism; originals outnumber traditional songs, and the core accompaniment of guitar and banjo is often supplemented by bass and drums, creating a lilt redolent of Rickie Lee Jones in "The Littlest Birds" and a reggae-tinged groove on the haunting old ballad "Rain and Snow". The band name may be a bit tough to get your lips around, but the music of this talented trio is a refreshing drink from a clear mountain stream. --Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers

CD Description

Debut album from Canadian trio is an accomplished collection of neo-traditional North American folk music. The Be Good Tanyas have been compared to Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris but their eclectic influences are shown on opening track 'Littlest Birds' which includes lyrics from Pink Floyd's 'JugBand Blues' the last song written for the group by Syd Barrett.

5.0 out of 5 stars a breath of fresh spring air, 16 Mar 2002
I heard the BGTs for the first time in session on the Bob Harris show Thursday evening this week, and immediately I knew this was a must buy CD. On Sat am the CD arrived from Amazon and I must have played my favourite songs 20 or 30 times by now (well, it is 5pm). Ok I'm hooked!
The two standout tracks for me are Littlest Birds and Don't you fall (in love with me). Littlest Birds is pure joy. In this technological age we've forgotten the power and beauty of spot on harmonies, clever but simple lyrics and melodies and a fresh tight sound. It's timeless music, and it's happening now.
The songs are a mix of traditional and original material. I like the original songs best. These
songs are written by Samantha and Frazey of the band, which shows they've got a creative energy which can take them forward further. You can tell they're singing because they love it, not because of money or a job. It's a wonderful fresh sound, and perfect for the start of spring.
I really wish they can make it big, just like Eva Cassidy last year. And the good thing is they're young, alive and will only get better.

5.0 out of 5 stars What wonderful sounds these girls generate, 30 Oct 2003

I first heard the Be Goods singing the Littlest Birds on BBC Radio 4 in the middle of 2002. Tears were streaming down my face - but not in a miserable way. Why? I don't know! The song just somehow pulled those strings for me. It took me ages to track down the album and now I listen to it when ever I need to be cheered up. The whole album speaks to me. Makes me wonder how emotions work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little birds, pretty songs, 3 Feb 2003

(REAL NAME)
I'm not usually a great fan of "folk" as a genre but picked up this on a recommendation, and despite some initial disappointment Blue Horse has had a place at the front of my CD collection for a good four months now. Classic banjo and fiddle riffs, some slightly naive but lovely harmonies, chirpy songs, sad songs and bitter-old-hobo songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars They so luvly!
What can I say, this album is a little masterpiece. The first time I heard it I was really stressed out and by the end I was completely chilled. The music is effortlessly cool.
