Amazon.co.uk Review

Mrs Beckham completes the set of solo Spice Girls albums with her self-titled debut, Victoria Beckham. Leading off with the first single and meatiest song on the album "Not Such an Innocent Girl", the 12 tracks breeze through a number of different styles with varying degrees of success. You can hear Victoria's voice adapt to suit the song, not quite finding a style of her own but still sounding far better than many critics could have imagined. "A Mind of It's Own" is very pleasant, inoffensive pop where VB sounds little like former band mate Geri in a whisperey, half-sung, half-spoken kind of way. Another song where her voice and style morph into that of a different pop peer is on "I.O.U.", a sweet ballad which sounds a little like a find on the studio floor during Madonna's Ray of Light sessions. It's unlikely that Victoria will win any new fans with this effort as there are no songs to stand out and wrestle for attention but aside from over-using the dreaded vo-coder, it is easily a pleasant enough, inoffensive pop record. --Georgina Collins

4.0 out of 5 stars An underrated pop gem, 20 May 2007
If you've been part of a pop act as phenomenally successful as the Spice Girls, establishing yourself as a solo artist in your own right is naturally going to be difficult. Even more so if you've gone on to marry another celebrity and become well-known as a famous face, style icon and footballer's wife. This is the conundrum that has dogged Victoria Beckham's post-Spice career, and has seen her much-maligned musical endeavours frequently branded a 'failure'. Her detractors often refer to the fact that, despite being the most rich, famous and instantly recognisable amongst her former bandmates, Victoria is the only ex-Spice Girl not to have attained a solo No.1 single.

In my opinion, Victoria's fame and media notoriety is the very thing that has prevented her singles and albums from becoming hits. Upon its release, this record was savaged by the press, with no apparent justification other than the media's dislike of Victoria herself. Of course, it would be ridiculous to argue that the album is a masterpiece, but taken as what it is - a frivolous, danceable pop record - it's perfectly enjoyable, bosating several sparkling gems of songs, and better by far than the vast majority of the other Spice members' solo efforts.

'Victoria Beckham' retains some of the r'n'b influences that characterised the Spice swansong 'Forever', but (for the most part) wisely eschews that album's slow jams and ballads in favour of more upbeat tracks, returning to the irresistable pop hooks that made the Spice Girls famous. Lead single 'Not Such an Innocent Girl' is a great pop song, but not the best track on the album; that accolade goes to the slick and sexy 'No Trix, No Games', with the supremely catchy 'Midnight Fantasy' a close contender. 'That Kind of Girl' is a rare thing, a pop ballad which manages to avoid becoming too sickly-sweet by tempering its sentiment with a dose of humour. Obviously, there are weak tracks, the overly saccharine and poorly produced 'Unconditional Love' being the worst. 'A Mind of Its Own', the second and final single to be taken from the album, is also poor - why on earth this was released rather than a strong, upbeat song such as 'Girlfriend' or 'Like That' will always be a mystery to me.

This album isn't a work of genius, but it's fun, upbeat, and easy to sing and dance along to. If you loved the Spice Girls, you should definitely add it to your collection. And if you're a fan of pop/r'n'b/dance music in general, give it a try - you'll be pleasantly suprised!

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good!, 4 Feb 2002
By A Customer
While Victoria's first solo effort may not have been strong enough to silence the critics, it at least should have shut them up for a bit. I was never a Spice Girls fan, but despite that and all the pre-release cynicism surrounding Posh and the album, I bought it anyway. Victoria may not have the voice of a Mariah Carey or the songwriting ability of an Alicia Keys, but she gives it her all and the result is a respectable solo debut. Critically-speaking, the songs are a little formulaic and slightly unspectacular, but they fit nicely together and make the album a cohesive whole. Although I doubt that any of the tunes will make it to number 1 (as "Not Such An Innocent Girl" already failed to do), a few of them are pretty catchy. Her next single, "A Mind Of Its Own" unarguably should have been the first release: it's more sophisticated than "Not Such An Innocent Girl." In "No Trix, No Games," (my personal favorite) she sings, "Gonna strip away my makeup what you get is what you see / No trix, no games, just me"-a punchy track that recalls her "Girl Power!" days. "Watcha Talkin' Bout," "Girlfriend," and "Like That" are upbeat and quite good (although I did think all of the tracks were pretty decent); "I.O.U," which she dedicates to her husband David, is more effective and original as a love ballad than the cliché-ridden "Unconditional Love"; "Every Part of Me," which she dedicates to her 3-year-old son, is somewhat mediocre but rescued by the sounds of young Brooklyn Beckham talking (well, more like crying) in the background. The album's biggest surprise is Victoria's voice: although great production undoubtedly had a hand in it, she sounds great. She scores especially high by Spice Girl standards, definitely not as talented as Mel C but stronger than Mel B, the perennially popular Geri and even musically successful Emma. She may not have an 8-octave range but her voice is pretty and polished.
Victoria has recently acknowledged that the negative press surrounding when the album was released said nothing about the actual music. That's unfortunate, because this album is a good listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ALBUM!!!, 23 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This album proves that Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham does have a voice and knows how to use it. There are so many fantastic songs on the album, each one with it's own merit. Ignore 'Not Such An Innocent Girl', a big mistake, but buy this album, it's worth it!

Track-by-Track review

1 Not Such An Innocent Girl - The worst song on the album, this shouldn't have made the album. The song isn't that catchy but Victoria certainly can sing, and she proves it here in this rather bland record. ( 6 / 10 )

2 A Mind Of Its Own - Much better, this is very surprising, the spoken parts and the verses really do work, and the chorus is just one of those choruses you just cannot erase from your head for the whole day. The second single, should do better than the first. (8 / 10)

3 That Kind Of Girl - A nice chilled out vibe on this song, with wonderful vocals from Victoria, a song for the Mums & Dads out there, Definitely NOT A SINGLE!!!, but really good all the same. ( 8 / 10 )

4 Like That - A fantastic R&B/Pop song, with a KILLER chorus. Victoria is full of attitude here, really catchy verses and a very sophisticated sound. Could be a single. ( 9 / 10 )

5 Girlfriend - Another wicked track, along the lines of P!NK & Destiny's Child. Really hard beats and a very catchy chorus. Halfway this song turns from an R&B song to a garage. Very good indeed, rumored to be the third single, should be!!!! ( 9 / 10 )

6 Midnight Fantasy - Hmmmm, not bad, but a bit unoriginal, a good party song, with sexy vocals. A bit similar to Kandi's 'Don't Think I'm Not', but a bit poppier! ( 7 / 10 )

7 I.O.U. - A really nice ballad, with a very orchestral sound, nice chorus and irresistible beats. Not a single. ( 7 / 10 )

8 No Trix, No Games - YES!!! This is EXCELLENT!!! Produced by the team who produced 'Genie In A Bottle', for Christina Aguilrea, this is soooo good. It has a nice pop/R&B edge to it and in the chorus; Victoria's voice is so hypnotic. Very good, could be a single. ( 9 / 10 )

9 I Wish - This is another brilliant song. This is produced by Soulshock & Karlin who produced for Whitney, Mya, Destiny's Child & Jennifer Lopez. This is more R&B than any of the other previous songs. Probably one of the standout tracks on the album. Victoria's vocals are superb on this and this HAS to make it as a single, EXCELLENT! ( 10 / 10 )

10 Watcha Talkin' Bout - Another Soulshock/Karlin song, another brilliant, excellent track, along the lines of Brandy & Monica and Destiny's Child. This is another song that could be a single. ( 9.5 / 10 )

11 Unconditional Love - Produced by Rhett Lawrence who did Melanie C's 'Never Be The Same Again', this is a spine tingling ballad, written for David Beckham by Victoria. Perfect for Christmas, Nice vocals and very tear-jerking. Another single perhaps?? ( 8 / 10 )

12 Every Part Of Me - A nice cute song to finish off the album, dedicated to Brooklyn Beckham. A nice beat and good vocals, not single material, but still very good. ( 8 / 10 )
