Amazon.co.uk Review

The Terry Thomas of children's television returns to the screen in Boom, Boom! The Best Of The Original Basil Brush Show. The raffish star, with his distinctive laugh, trademark tweeds and enduring catchphrase, was created in 1963, diligently learning his trade before hitting the big time in the 1970s in his own show. The cheeky vulpine host went on to vex a succession of "Mr"s with his continual interrupting, ad-libbing and appalling jokes:
Mr Roy: "Do you know about ethics?"
Basil, lisping: "Yes, it's somewhere near Sussex, isn't it?"
The show's guest list boasted the best of 1970s celebrity: Alvin Stardust, Cilla Black, John Inman and Demis Roussos to mention just a few--all treated to Basil's unique blend of charm and brusque wit in a series of excruciating sketches.

The show was dropped in the 1980s but Boom, Boom! The Best Of The Original Basil Brush Show proves that Basil, now a pop-culture icon, is a truly 21st-century fox. --Helen Baker

4.0 out of 5 stars Basil's brilliant badinage bomms back!, 20 Jan 2002
By M. Nix "rascaltrousers" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was delighted to see this video released. Seeing the cheeky little fella again was great fun. I am not sure I would agree with all the selections for this compilation as being Basil's 'best' moments, but I enjoyed the video immensely. I certainly hope that volume two comes out sooner rather then later! Very nostalgic and hugely enjoyable cornball comedy, and none the worse for being so. Buy it if you liked Basil when you were a kid, and relive some golden childhood moments. I don't think you will be disappointed. Oh, and my two year old daughter loved it too, so perhaps the humour is less dated than I thought!

4.0 out of 5 stars Where did Gertie go_, 29 Jan 2002
By fgdouglas@hotmail.com (czech Republic) - See all my reviews
A funny enough video, and an hour long of pure ¨Basil is not to be sniffed at and long overdue.
I was disappointed though that the storys were not featured more. Little Tikka has only a walk on role. and Dirty Gertie from Number thirty doesn't even rate a mention.

So a fine and dandy video and worthy for kids and nostalgia seekers alike, but the best? Surely the best is yeat to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars Funny in parts, but a little disappointing, 29 Aug 2003
By A Customer
As a big kid I have been enjoying the new Basil Brush shows on TV and bought this DVD hoping that it would be a great reminder of how much better the original Basil really was. Unfortunately having watched it I finished up feeling a bit disappointed.

With only 52 minutes of action on offer I thought that these clips would be only the funniest of the funny, but there are quite a few that left me with only a slight smile rather than aching ribs.

On the plus side, there are enough genuinely hilarious moments to keep you watching (Basil singing along with Demis Roussos is pure genius) and some of his one-liners had me on the floor.

All-in-all I'm glad I bought it and hope that the next compilation offers a bit more of the good stuff!
