5.0 out of 5 stars Articulate, Informed, Proper Music, 23 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Here, for once, is an album title that bears some relation to the music it contains. For the rap lover who wants to expand their musical horizons or the classical listener desiring an insight into the forbidding world of MCs and DJs, 'ANGLES WITHOUT EDGES' is a recording that breaks new holes in the wall separating hip-hop and jazz.
Produced by rap stalwart Madlib and West Coast mixmaster Peanut Butter Wolf, this group has impeccable hip-hop credentials that shine through in tunes such as 'Uno Esta' and 'Daylight', tracks oozing the sun drenched, synthesized groove that has made the Californian Brand of rap such a powerful musical force over the last ten years.
What makes this record so exciting however is that the Quintet themselves are not only first rate musicians but seem to have listened to everything, and their articulate, researched and improvisational method has produced a record too complex to be categorised. Their approach is reminiscent of the later works of Miles Davis (a major influence), in the bewildering array of styles and electronic sounds utilised. Everything from standards ('Rugged Tranquility') through Charlie Parker ('Julani'), to old Earth Wind and Fire tracks and LL CoolJ ('Sun Goddess' and 'Mestizo Eyes') is mixed up to produce what really is ground breaking music, as well as the coolest thing to roll the car window down to.
If the album has a flaw it is its bitsyness. The 19 tracks have far too many themes to really explore properly in one album. The classic albums using this approach, such as Davis' 'In a Silent Way' took their time over fewer tunes and are much more satisfying works as a result.
However, it is harsh to compare anyone to Davis, and this does not make the album any less seminal or timely. If there was still any doubt as to hip-hop's legitamacy as a serious art form, Yesterdays New Quintet has dispelled it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Find the groove, 15 May 2005
Just to reinforce what the other reviewers have said, this is yet another top album from the prolific Madlib. His presence really is a mark of quality.

Angles Without Edges is unmistakably Madlib yet different to any of his production work; it is a serious jazz album, albeit one that will appeal to any of his fans. It follows his familiar style of short, sublime grooves and ideas, some of which are almost underdeveloped - which makes this album an enduring one - this time in a smooth, hazy jazz style.

This is a CD to put on to raise a smile; full of joyful grooves and wonderfully arranged jazz tunes. Hats off to the Mad Kid once again.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUBLIME!! Interstellar, hip hop-jazz fusion, 27 Jul 2004
By A Customer
Madlib is simply one of the greatest producers around at the moment. This album shows that this statement does not simply apply to hip-hop, but to Jazz as well. If you're into the melding of mellow hip-hop beats with some cosmic jazz, buy this. Like a lot of his work it will be something which you'll love at first, ... then you'll find an even deeper appreciation of it. Madlib's Quasimoto: The Unseen is your next port of call, if you're an open-minded hip-hop lover.
