5.0 out of 5 stars Trip-goth, 19 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This album is a well crafted ambient post-rock development from former NIN (Nine Inch Nails) member Chris Vrenna.

Containing 4 vocal tracks that rise upon from the depths of the beautiful created soundscapes and containing vocals from David Slyvian,Craig Wedren and Will Oldham.

The first single, Linoleum,is a melding of melencholic rock with darker ambient beats and can be compared to Slyvain's solo offerings.

Other tracks vary from trip-goth outings like Happy Child to the electronic lunacy of Microsize Boy.

Running close to over 60 minutes of music each song is generally 4 minutes long and contains few repetative beats.

While each individual song on this 13 track album offers a distinctive sound and beat, which adds depth and variation, there is an underlying theme that unites the album thus creating one of those rare masterpieces that allows for songs to be listened to singlely or as whole.

I would recommend this album for fans of NIN as well as more chilled ambient post rock outfits like Godspeed you black emperor!. A must buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece., 1 Sep 2003
By A Customer
This album is truly original, ex-Nine Inch Nails man Chris Vrenna has created a melting-pot of styles that manages to sound like nothing else I've heard. Overwhelmingly mechanical and yet full of soul, the beats and squelches throughout the album remind me slightly of some of Aphex Twin's work, yet more 'kitsch' and endearing...if such a thing is possible. I read somewhere that the entire album is based around the picture on the front cover, that it captivated Vrenna at first sight and he created the album to be a soundtrack to the boy's thoughts. This and Vrenna's work with NIN resulted in me buying this album (without hearing it) shortly after it came out, and it still manages to surprise me with its sheer originality.

All the guest vocalists provide excellent vocals, 'Take me Alive' is one example and probably my favourite Tweaker track, an exercise in pure genius. The whole album is patchy on first listen as some tracks such as this are more instantly accessible than the others and they just grab you - but perseverance brings rewards, as soon enough the album melds itself into one awesome track.

It's extremely hard to describe Tweaker's music, electronica is probably a word I'd use to start with, but it encompasses so much more - Rock, Pop, Dance. Some of the more spacious parts of the tracks remind me of sections of NIN's 'The Fragile', some of the guitar work reminds me of parts of Apollo 440's 'Electro-Glide in Blue', there's some of the aforementioned Aphex in there, 'Full Cup Of Coffee' reminds me of a Radiohead track from 'Kid A'...and yet this album manages to be as good as anything from these artists, whilst still sounding totally different.

This album is like the painting it is based on - individual, strange, endearing and thoughtful. Essential for any open-minded fans of real music. Check out the Tweaker website, he has a whole page of remixes, rarities and the odd album track in mp3 format for download. There are some remixes of tracks he did for the soundtrack to a computer game called 'Alice' there, they sound amazing and I am now extremely tempted to get that soundtrack from Amazon to alleviate my wait for the new Tweaker album.

2.0 out of 5 stars Serious Pop Music, 30 Jul 2002
By A Customer
Trod on the same derivative path as David Sylvian, this ambient techno outing by Tweaker will satisfy the most ardent Japan fan and disappoint almost anyone else. And it is those ardent Japan fans who will be happiest here. There is plenty of mood and atmosphere but no good songs. If you like this kak, listen to that high bastion of seriousness David Sylvian. I recommend the curiously dreadful Camphor. Otherwise, for people who enjoy music stay well away.
