Amazon.co.uk Review

Mission: Impossible was one of the best action blockbusters of the 1990s, deriving a quality unique among its peers from the tension between Brian De Palma's directorial stylisation and the overriding presence of its star and producer, Tom Cruise. The original 1960s television series provides not only the wonderful musical motif, but also the layered complexity of false realities and masked identities, which are revealed with the playful conjuring of a Russian doll. De Palma's trademark set pieces include a giant exploding fishtank in Prague, a helicopter chase through the Channel Tunnel, and, most notably, a break-in to steal a vital disc from CIA headquarters in Langley. The moment in the latter when, in almost complete silence, Cruise dangles precariously from a cable is as sublimely exhilarating as any in American movies of recent years. --Steve Napleton

Visually stunning, and a likely must for John Woo aficionados, the second Mission: Impossible outing from megastar Tom Cruise suffers from an inconsistent tone and tired plot devices--not only recycled from other films, but also repeated throughout the film. Despite remarkable cinematography and awe-inspiring, trademark Woo photography, the movie offers a tepid story from legendary screenwriter-director Robert Towne (Chinatown) and a host of other writers, most uncredited. Woo's famed mythic film-making is far from subtle, with heroic Hunt frequently slow-motion walking through fire, smoke or other similar devices, replete with a white dove among pigeons to signal his presence. The emphasis on romance is an attempt to develop character and a more human side to superspy Hunt, but still the story proves a distraction from the exciting action sequences. --NF Mendoza, Amazon.com

4.0 out of 5 stars mission impossible, 17 Oct 2001
By S Tran (london) - See all my reviews
Excellent combination of what essentially are two distinctive and renowned directors attempt on the adventures of ethan hunt. Although the first film was accused of being too complex, this merely increases the tension of what is required of a movie of intrigue and espionage. The action is explosive and contributes to the story while the break-in of the FBI headquaters at langley is cinematically breathtaking! the second film however is slightly dissapointingly missing of an engaging plot. That said, this film delivers in what john woo does best, action! From slo-mo to explosive set-pieces and the ever present white doves. The best thing about this box set is the price! Two movies for what essentially is the price of one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much more, 21 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Overall I have to say that I enjoyed both these films very much. The firsts action scenes (and in particular the break in at the CIA headquarters) are second to none. The problems with it though were clear to see. The plot was too confusing and you really had to concentrate to keep up with all the to-ings and fro-ings of all the characters. The second was also a good film with all the traditional Woo explosions and action scenes. My only problem with this was that they'd gone the other way and there wasn't enough of a plot in this one (it felt too much like a bond film) Overall though I recommend both the films highly as entertaining action films although I think they both could have been so much better considering the actors and directors involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Da da, da da, da, da, da da, da, da, da da...DUN DUN DUN!!!, 10 Feb 2004

A materpice of a spy thriller ( evn though a 2 is in the title)! A truely enjoyable 90 minutes of *Tom Cruise* being well, just Tom to be honest, nice climbing scene at the start great on a big screen, only slightly confused by the Audi TT v's Porsche Boxster car chase prooving Tom needs some driving lessons. He's cool, suave and quick to ACT! The story is nearly as good as the theme tune (see title above) and the feel is *glossy* and yet somehow comic book despite overtures of classy sets and Bondesk enlightenment. Don a dark suit, get out those *Ray Bans* from the closet and make sure you spend a good 10 minutes in front of the mirror saying ***'If I told you where I was going I wouldn't be on holiday'***!
PS: Make sure nobody sees you!
