4.0 out of 5 stars ENTERTAINING, 4 Nov 2007
By stuart "s.vernon" (MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Two down-on-their-luck 'artifact acquirers,' Corey (Rodney Rowlands) and Terrence (Kevin Patrick Walls) are told that their services are no longer needed for their current employer, Mallion (Robert Davi) and are now out on the streets. An artifact collector, Simon Magus (Ed Trotta) is interested in their skills and employs them to find the ancient Rock of Lazarus, a stone used to bring people back to life. They are never told of where the stone lies, but are given scant clues to find out. Taking them to an old friend, Chad (Tony 'Tiny' Lister Jr.) he gives Corey the answers, but also gives him some new questions to answer. Using these new clues along with the answers to their previous answers, Corey and Terrence search deeper for the Stone, but accidentally loose it to a secret society that wants to resurrect an ancient demon on Earth. Receiving special help from Mallion, they are able to defeat the demon and are able to restore order and peace.

The Good News: The main reason why this film is so harshly attacked is because it is very corny and is really proud of it. I like the film for this reason. The low-budget effect and almost satirical performances by the two leads really add to the atmosphere that is created. It does employ a new approach; having two wisea#ses together in a movie that is a reflection of how they are themselves. They do have a natural chemistry that is almost improvisational but are still hilarious. They can bounce off each other really well and would be a real treat to see them in a natural comedy. There is a lot of goofy slapstick in there as well, to be fully open to all possible comedy aspects. On to the terror, which was really missing, but there was a good deal of mystery built up about the demon, who on screen does look really impressive and believable. It is possible to conceive a creature could look like that one. There are also a couple of sex scenes in here for the nudity fan, and they aren't exactly really gratuitous or unnecessary, but there is one that is also used as a laugh, and is the biggest one in the film. Terrence and Corey enter a brothel where they suspect may contain information on the whereabouts of the Rock, and they both take a prostitute and go into a room. Terrence is trying to pump his for information, and she tells him not to worry, and she answer his questions later and goes down on him, while he keeps talking. Then she pops up as Debbie Gibson, his childhood crush, and she goes down on him, then he looks over and sitting in the corner is his mother, looking on in disappointment, and starts to explain to him what he is doing wrong. I only want to give this scene away because it is really funny upon first viewing and is not expected.

The Bad News: There isn't a whole lot of blood and gore in here, but then there isn't much of a body count anyway. A total of four people die in this, and two are off-screen, so not a whopping opportunity for blood to be raining down the screen. The demon could've become a really bloodthirsty demon that is commonly portrayed to up the body count and alleviate the boredom that the first half is. Not too much goes on there, as it is merely the introduction and why they are searching for the rock. Other than that, there isn't a lot of activity shown, and is a serious complaint among its supporters. A few more deaths could've also shown that the demon was a ruthless creature in its quest to be reborn. A large cast is also wasted, as many are not really given anything to do but stand around and give information about the truth to the rock that the heroes have to solve to go to the next clue. Again, the goofy antics of the heroes might be a bit hard to swallow for die hard suspense and horror fans, so watch out for that.

The Final Verdict: Fans of blood-and-gore horror films and those who take horror films like themselves, seriously, are advised to watch with caution. Those who don't may find another little gem in this somewhat entertaining film.

I was expecting a horror film but this is not scary at all but it is quite funny. Don't waste your time on this dire film. Odd, very odd.
low-budget effects and satirical performances by the two leads makes this a very poor film indeed.
