Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
There are several train-simulators on the market but the special appeal of Hornby's Virtual Railway is that it retains that treasured "hobby-activity" appeal by never losing sight of the model railway analogy and the special satisfaction of constructing and operating a perfectly scaled replica of a working railway.

This package gives everyone the chance to get his or her hands on a whole lot of top-end, Hornby model-railway kit that would otherwise prove more expensive than the average train-set enthusiast can afford. You can experiment with the steam, diesel and electric engines, plus the rolling stock, track elements and scenic objects available in the Hornby catalogue and see your dream railroad layout take shape before your eyes, with the benefit of being able to try countless layouts to get the perfect effect, before committing to the real spend. Every item is labelled with the corresponding real-world catalogue number and a printable inventory is automatically generated as you build. Six pre-built layouts provide an idea of the possibilities before you get stuck in to the design of your dream layout.

After a little getting used to the tools, designing your railway is very easy and follows the same steps you follow with any train set. First select a size of table for your track and a room to set it in, then lay out the scenery and track sections and put your trains and carriages in place. Then it's full steam ahead as you watch your train set whirling around your specially designed track.

Graphical quality is remarkably good--a modestly specified computer system with a 3-D graphics card produces highly satisfactory, smooth views of your railway in action with the facility to fly-through and around your layout, observing it dynamically from every angle. --David Shepard

5.0 out of 5 stars Hornby Virtual Railway, 1 Oct 2001
    By A Customer
Just purchased HVR and have got to say I am really impressed. What a great product.
You can design and build all sorts of 3D layouts and you've basically got as much virtual track as you want. The whole product is orientated around Hornby's track and train models so once you've designed your model railway you can use the inventory to go and buy the exact pieces you need to build it in reality.
Downside is that the table is limited to about 10ft by 6ft foot and the table surface is all on one level. Would be nice too if there was a guide on how to go about creating your ideal real model railway. There are no tunnels and bridges but having said that there are so many good points about this product that overall I have to say that it is fantastic. Hornby say that there will be new model trains on their website soon that will plug straight in to the product.
The kids love it which makes a pleasant change to them beating each other up all the time. Definitely a must buy if you are into model railways. It simply takes a traditional hobby and makes it really appeal to the masses again. Well done Hornby.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good first attempt but......, 3 Mar 2002
    By A Customer
I have read the other reviewers' comments and would like to clarify a few points raised. First of all I do not consider this to be a game but rather a railway modeller's tool to assist in building a real model railway so anyone who expects good gameplay should look elswhere. Microsoft Train Simulator is the one for you.
On the plus side, this model railway simulator allows you to experiment with Hornby's track pieces on a range of board sizes until you are happy with a plan to model for real. The fact that you can virtually test your layout is an unnecessary addition as, like other reviewers noted, there are a lot of imperfections in the "Game Play". Tracks do not seem to go into each other properly at certain joints. Points can be worked with careful positioning of the mouse and clicking but this will not isolate trains. One controller works all trains simultaneously.
Being a modeller's tool, I found the inability to print the 2D plan quite frustrating. I have the computer in one room and the layout being built in another far away so I had to keep going back and forth to see what track to lay next!

Having said that I found this tool to be a useful companion to Hornby's Track Plans book. I started with a plan from the book and modified it considerably to my liking and maximising the board size available. Without the Virtual Railway CDRom, I would have had to buy a lot of track pieces for my experiments which I may have not used at all in the final layout. Finally the program does not warn you of probable short circuits that may be caused with the improper use of return loops etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hornby Review, 23 Feb 2002
    By A Customer
People buy this game for two reaons. 1. to help design a model railway,2. they want a model railway game. In both cases it is very good so long as you accept it's limitations. Unlike a previous reviewer I found that you CAN control points, which makes all the difference. It's limitations are
    1. max size of layout is only 10ft by 6ft, but still reasonable by most standards.
    2. limited to 100 accessories (houses, platforms, engine sheds etc.)
    3. Very limited rolling stock (but you can download more from Hornby web site).
    4. all tracks are live and all trains are controlled by one controller. Isolating tracks have no effect and points don't isolate. However a train cannot go past a point closed against it so in effect points CAN be used to isolate trains.

It would have made the game so much more realistic to have 'real' electrics with controllers plugged in where you want them, with points and isolating tracks etc. working as they should. But this would have made the game difficult and technical, too much so I fear for someone not experienced with a real model railway.

So accept it's limitations and enjoy it.
Use points to isolate trains (e.g. so you can stop trains at stations whilst others are still running). Go back into design mode when you want to separate or turn rolling stock.

BTW - I've only had this game for two days!
