Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Taking skateboarding sims to a new level, Airblade for the PlayStation 2 puts the player at the controls of an airboard in a near-future city. The future, it seems, is a dangerous place, and when a friend of yours invents an anti-gravity skateboard (the Airblade of the title) and is promptly kidnapped by an evil corporation for his trouble it's up to you to race to the rescue.

Imagine Tony Hawk's with no wheels and what you have in essence is Airblade. It's possible to perform tricks in the style of standard extreme sports games but with the added advantage that you use the air to your best advantage. This manifests itself in some of the tasks to be completed in story mode (read: the rescue of your best pal from the evil corporation). At one point there's a complicated set of hand grabs required to swing your way up the side of a set of buildings in order to dangle from the landing skis of a hovering helicopter. It sounds complicated but it's actually really good fun and very well executed.

Airblade is a real treat for the eyes. The cityscapes are large and colourful and there're plenty of surfaces you can trick from; if you can see it (and reach it) then you can also grind and jump it--essential in some of the gaming modes for racking up a reasonable points score. All in all, Airblade is consistent and entertaining; the tunes are a little forgettable but the action more than makes up for this failing and creates an atmosphere that will have you filled with just-one-more-go syndrome. --Chris Russell

Product Description
Ride a flying skateboard through vast cityscapes, sinister secret bases and storage facilities, and around the top of a 100-story skyscraper. Unimpeded by gravity or friction, Airblade lets you move faster, jump higher, and perform more breathtaking, outrageous stunts than any Earth-bound board. There are tons of tricks to master, and hidden "Round The World" combos. Airblade features 10 game variations: five single-player modes (including Story Mode, Score Attack and the top secret Stunt Attack) four head-to-head two-player modes, (including Ribbon Tag, Show-Off, and Trick List modes) and Party Mode for up to eight players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dont listen to the 1 star review!!!!, 23 Nov 2001
I rented this game last weekend and it is class!
It is not mind numbingly repetitive boarding at all! Tony hawks and SSX are great games I agree but this is completely different and not in anyway at all a bad game!
The gameplay is brilliant and there is loads to do, there are numerous multiplayer games which are a great laugh and the story mode although difficult at times just requires you to learn the level and tasks needed to be completed so you can get it all complete within the time limit set.

I agree it does get frustarting but it gives you a great sense of achievement when complete and playing the levels time and time again is not repetitive as they are so good and you can take a different route around them every time!

There are tonnes of tricks you can perform here too and for each that you pull off consecutively it adds to a combo bar. The more you do the higher your score, In two player mode this is great you can work your way up to a tall building pulling off grinds and spins then onceup there leap off flying to the ground doing all sorts of mad stunts on your marty mcfly hoverboard!

My next buy definitely, I love it, I`m getting TH3 as well but this is definitely a different genre of game.

5.0 out of 5 stars This game is Awesome, 31 Aug 2001
Floating about on your board, you have three main actions: grab, trick, and grind. These are mapped to the top three face buttons. The trick button performs body tricks, smoothly-animated moves like flips and handstands the sci-fi back to the future style setting removes many of the constraints imposed on a more realistic games, resulting in some way over-the-top maneuvers). Grind lets you slide along rails and edges. Grab is a multipurpose button, though -- most times it just does grab tricks, but if you do it near a horizontal or vertical pole, you can swing around it like a gymnast and then let go to launch yourself through the air.

That plays into several of the level goals -- Airblade includes a story mode where you play two oppressed boarders trying to escape some sort of evil corporate thing called GPC. In one story level shown, you have to evade surveillance, which means smashing cameras by swinging on their mounting poles and pulling tricks through "Wanted" billboards. Another demands that you hop up to the high perches where a series of snipers are ensconced.

It's a good deal more fun as yet to just wander around the levels, though. There are open plazas full of grindable edges and rails, bridges to ride up and over, buildings ringed with ledges, dead-ends full of quarterpipes, and strong line design throughout. Combos are easy to pull off, and the transitional animations for both riders and boards make them look very good, because each trick fades nicely into the next one. Link together lots of tricks and, in addition to the cool animations and big point scores, you fill up an SSX-style boost meter, which can give you the speed you need to finish a tough level goal.

It's surprising to see a boarding title that manages to impress at the same show as Tony Hawk 3. Airblade has its own look and feel to make it different, though -- its texture work is actually a fair bit more detailed than Hawk's, although Airblade's framerate hiccups more often. The final version should of course not have so many such problems, and it'll include five characters and seven levels when it ships to Europe in the fall. A great twist on a existing genre, and a great game.

4.0 out of 5 stars A rocking Game, but not enough., 29 Nov 2001
I don't know what everyone seems to have against this game, it looks great, plays well, is a lot of fun and has no loading times! The only minus point is the difficulty increase in the last two levels. The game will last forever if you are always trying to beat your best score, but if you are only going to play through once you'll miss a lot of fun!
