Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Dropship: United Peace Force puts you in charge of a fleet of chunky VTOL aircraft and all the various tanks and weapons they can fit inside their metal tummies. Being politically correct is not what this game is about; when its clearly euphemistic subtitle refers to "peace force" it actually means "huge belligerent army", and by "united" it obviously means "run by the US". To add to the topicality, and the potential to offend, there's a bunch of rather unfortunate references to Afghanistan. But, hey, what the game lacks in sensitive storytelling it certainly makes up for in ambition.

The core of the gameplay is a fairly involved--for a console--flight sim complete with two different control systems when your craft is flying and hovering. With AI-controlled wingmen, some highly percussive weapons and even a soupçon of real-time strategy, Dropship is clearly aiming high. Unfortunately, though, its aim is just off and the whole has conspired to be slightly less than the sum of its parts. Perhaps it's the frequently unfair AI and mission designs, or the non-intuitive controls, but Dropship requires just that bit too much effort to make it an instant purchase for everyone. The graphics are pretty good, though, and considerable effort has been expended on the game, so if you've got the patience unusual and rewarding gaming will be your reward. --David Jenkins

Product Description
Dropship: United Peace Force invites you to deploy and destroy using cutting-edge dropship technology to reinforce peace in worldwide hot spots. Load your dropship with deadly combat vehicles and fly, drive and shoot your way through a massive enemy-infested photorealistic terrain. Your decisions affect the outcome as your wingmen and ground forces rely on your guidance and support. Reveal a tale of military might and political intrigue as you and your copilot take out tactical targets and cripple enemy strongholds.

Photorealistic 3-D environments include the mountains of Colombia and the coastline of China. Each map has a playable area of 40 by 40 km and a draw distance to the horizon. The variety of high-technology air and ground combat craft in the game includes escort fighters, recon planes, battle tanks, armoured assault vehicles and, of course, the dropship.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dropship - full game review (& not just the demo!), 28 Jan 2002
By A Customer
What a breath of fresh air this game is, after countless PS2 driving, football (and so on...) games. What's more, it's not your typical flying game. Yes you fly, but you can also hover, and in some missions you get to use ground vehicles. And if you want a challenge, then Dropship is the game for you...

Though not as hard as some PS2 mags would have you believe, it's certainly no piece of cake. The game starts off reasonably easy, and you should be able to coast through the first 4 missions without too much trouble. However, reach mission 1.5 ("Eye of the storm"), and the difficulty curve goes up somewhat (game hint: ignore the radio advice & use hover mode at a safe distance to take out the SAM sites to make life much easier). Complete this mission though, and you are faced with the almost infamous level at the start of campaign 2, enititled "Fire in the sky"...this mission is very tough. Not only do you have to take out wave after wave of fighters, you'll also have to land to reload your ammo (and usually under fire as well!), and protect your base from bombers!. I'm glad to say though that things do get somewhat easier after this one rock hard level. It took me around a dozen attempts to complete this mission, so my advice is just to stick with it. Anyway, by the time you've done it you should be so proficient at piloting the dropship (and dogfighting) that subsequent missions seem like a piece of cake anyway!.

At first piloting the dropship seems a little daunting (and I advise doing the training levels), but after a short while it becomes second-nature. It's great the way you can easily switch between hover and flight modes, take-off & land, or kick-in with the afterburners. If you want, the CPU will assist you in landings (this is the default setting), though I prefer doing it manually. The first-person view is the best one to use, though the third-person view is useful for landing.

Graphics...generally the graphics are great. Although some of the landscapes seem a little barren, they are quite realistic. Hills, valleys, and some structures (normally being the focus of the mission) all fly around without a hint of pop-up. Explosions are nicely done, especially the way enemy aircraft crash to the ground in a ball of flames. Another nice feature is the "missile cam", where the camera stays with your (fired) missile until it's point of impact, though it's not always practical to watch this!. One of the best graphical highlights for me, are the replays. Normally something you'd associate with racing games, the post-mission replays work surprisingly well. They give many TV style camera views, often looking at your dropship from the enemies point of view. Other nice graphical touches in the game include; the HUD display temporarily going down when hit, the dust/sand being blown up by your dropship when taking-off/landing, and some of the lovely skies.

Overall then, if you're into this genre of video game I don't see why you shouldn't like this. There's plenty of variety in the gameplay, with different dropships/vehicles to fly/drive, and you'll often receive new mission updates to the ones you're already doing. Sound is very good too, though I prefer playing with the music off. It's not bad music or anything, it's just that the game seems more immersive without it. Though the difficulty level may put off a few people, it's really only one rock hard mission that I've so far come across, so just concede to the fact that it will take you (at least) several attempts, and keep at it. Once you're past it, you can enjoy the rest of the game.

Dropship is a great PS2 exclusive. A good sense of actually flying, coupled with dogfights, variety of gameplay, and some good (occasionally great) graphics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ace Combat 4 can eat my thrust!!!, 15 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Yes like most others I bought this game wondering if Ace Combat 4 would be better. Well all I can say is that after playing this game Ace Combat 4 felt far too easy and alot less responsive and realistic.
Dropship provides some great moments, and yes, does get difficult at times but it is challenging and exciting enough to keep you coming back for more. AC4 does have smoother looking graphics but Dropship by no means has average graphics and gives the gamer a feeling of being in the thick of the action. The added bonus of having some ground level missions helps to break up the action and give the game variety.
The replay option gives you another look at the level in a 'Gran Turismo in the air' way which is far superior to AC4's similar option. Although the controls are a little different the beginning tutorials soon iron this out and soon they become instinctive. Overall this is a good game that deserves credit for being a different take on the Flight Sim. Overall a nice fly around to have parked in your living room.

4.0 out of 5 stars How patient are you? Let 'Dropship' be the test..., 14 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Despite (or because?) of not hearing too much hype about this game I was intrigued by the little I had gleaned about it: take control of both ground & VTOL craft, varied mission environments, great graphics making the most of the PS2's chipset.
I must say, whilst I have not been disappointed with any of these preconceptions, this game has sorely tried my patience, perhaps one too many times.

Being a fan of PSX games like the Ace Combat, Colony Wars and G-Police series, I have a fair idea of what to expect from a console flyer.
The ships are quite agile and are the match of your AI opponents, but what removes one star is the VERY steep learning curve. Just when you think you have a handle on the ship's controls and your enemies, along comes a scenario which forces the player to rethink their strategy (*HINT*: most of the in-game radio advice you get is WRONG!).

Are you prepared to redo 15 minutes of flying only to fail the mission .. again. Is that your final answer? Are you sure? Want to phone a friend??

This game is 'hard as coffin nails', no doubt, but it makes it all the sweeter to complete a mission after 10 tries (no exaggeration). I have had nightmares about certain missions... :¬(

Definitely one for gamers who are looking for depth/realism over weekend warriors in search of a fun/pick-up-and-play factor. Can't wait to try Ace Combat 4.

FOR: graphics, sound, game replay, depth, longevity(?)
AGAINST: difficulty, difficulty, difficulty! and did I mention it was quite tricky?
