The previous two incarnations of This is Football have failed to break the footie-game hegemony enjoyed by EA's FIFA and Konami's ISS, despite being a very playable hybrid of the two series. TIF 2002 may finish higher up the video-game league this season though, as it's the first of the big Xmas football games to be released and soccer-loving PS2 owners in desperate need of a fix will seize gratefully on the first decent representation of the beautiful game this year.

In gameplay terms not much has changed since the last version; This is Football is still a fast-flowing, end-to-end arcade romp rather than a considered simulation, though there are hidden strategic depths to discover as you negotiate the four difficulty settings. Strategies and goal scoring moves learnt from TIF 1 & 2 still work--the sprint down the touchline followed by an in-swinging cross to the far post usually results in a goal (provided you have a half-way decent striker).

The new TIF also offers real player names (no Michael Orin nonsense) and likenesses--though this becomes less accurate as you descend down the leagues (yes, this time you can play as Port Vale!) and the players become more obscure. There are a limited number of stadia offered, but these too are lovingly realised. In fact, on the eye-candy front, TIF will be hard to beat this year.

The slick presentation and accessible gameplay coupled with the wealth of leagues available (Jumpers For Goalposts is back) should ensure that, for one season at least, the race for the video-game championship should be a three-horse race. At the very least TIF 2002 qualifies for Europe. --Michael Bartley

This Is Football 2 builds on the realism, atmosphere and gameplay of its predecessor, adding many new gameplay features such as improved artificial intelligence, new special moves and real time strategies as well as faster, more responsive player movement. In addition, there are more teams and competitions, including a unique school football mode and a "Timewarp" league featuring the greatest teams of the last 50 years.

This game outstands graphically from all soccer games (Fifa 2002 and ISS)on the PS2, come to think of it on all platforms. I love my football and when I found out that my wife got me this title as a christmas present I wasnt at first impressed to try another footy game after playing an even poorer attempt for this years FIFA 2002 and the unbeatable ISS, but team soho has really come up with a shocker of a game. Its not perfect in all areas. The animations needs to be polished as well as the AI. The game has an easy pick up and play arcade feel which isnt too complicated as ISS and has tones of hot atmosphere. The pro players look amazing.I have had a blinding christmas with the 4 player multi tap option with my mates (ManU 3 Tottenham 1). This games is up there with ISS. I wonder what This is football 2003 has to offer?

This game is the best football game i have played. The depth of gameplay is suprising after playing it for 3 weeks i am still learning new ways to get the ball in the back of the net. The graphics are amazing and most of the players you want to recognise, you can. The speed of play is just right and the different players have noticably different abilities, Beckham can cross like his real life counterpart, and Mike 'Boy Wonder' Owen is just as fast and deadly as he was in Englands 5-1 thrashing of Germany. There isnt much to complain about here (Henry looks a bit strange)and if you want a good game of footy on your PS2 this is the game for you!

I was unsure about getting this game after having this is football 2 for PSone which was just awful the graphics where laughable and the team edit section was a joke having to load each team you edited one by one.

Thankfully all that has changed the graphics are stunning for the photo realistic players and the other players are just as good as fifa 2001 there are also numbers on the front of the shirts and the shorts as well as player names on the backs which makes just a little bit more realistic. The team edit section has changed as well the kit edit is better than ever and now when the game starts it loads all the teams you have edited.

The gameplay is better than fifa by a mile and 2 player matches are great fun .The controls are good and respond quicklly there are a few trick moves which really help in one on one situations, some mags say they don't work and you can't beat a player with just speed and they are right you can't beat the oppostion with speed but a well timed trick and your past them or the drag you down for a free kick, the triks are realistic shimmies and spins not stupid keepy ups which look pathetic.

The commentery is super and the crowd actually cheer when you score they boo after a bad tackle and cris of ooooh when your striker misses an open goal. the crowd also jump up in celebration you can see there mouths moving singing the chant it adds so much it really feels that it is a big match.

All the teams are there, English Prem, English first, French 1st and 2nd, Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch, Belgium, Portugal and Scottish prem which also includes Ayr United, Ross County, Inverness CT, Raith Rovers and St Mirren if you support one of these teams you have to get this game. There are also Euro teams that include russian, romainian, greek and alot more, also there are world club cup teams Boca Juniors and a few others also national sides from every part of the world and time worp sides like 50s Real Madrid and 60s Celtic there are just so many options.

Overall this is a really good game of football beats fifa easily it's not as good as Pro Evolution Soccer will be but what will? Until it comes out this is the best PS2 football game avalible.
