Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
As per sleeve notes, "Reduced", "Re-interpreted", and "Re-constructed", Richie Hawtin sets the mission statement and consequent tone for another DJ mix excursion on DE9: Closer to the Edit. Indeed as with his ever evolving and touring Decks EFX & 909 moniker, Closer to the Edit takes another look at how the "mix" format can be translated and adapted by the DJ that extends beyond simply mixing the required number of tracks together beat for beat. So Hawtin's retort to the "by numbers" compilation market is a microscopic slicing and severing of over a hundred original tracks into bare components that are rebuilt into 70 tracks over 53 minutes. However intense this sounds, baring the hallmark of Hawtin's atom-splitting attention to detail, the whole represents a fluid journey through the peaks and troughs of the almost technically perfect night out. Techno's underground cognoscenti are included with Rhythm & Sound, Process, Nick Rapaccioli and Baby Ford all manipulated to form the backbone of each track. This is a forward-thinking compilation that not only defends the corner of those who are open to improvisation, but promotes the notion that music in its original form, through the embracing of technology, can become a different yet still identifiable body, with new meaning, tone and accent. It's impeccable. --Found Sounds

5.0 out of 5 stars Richie Hawtin reinvents the mix CD!, 7 Sep 2001
By drhexagon@hotmail.com (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: DE9: Closer to the Edit (Audio CD)
It may sound like an outrageous claim to make but it is certainly true. Initially the idea of over 70 tracks in 53 minutes seemed a tad ambitious and I wasn't expecting the mix to be smooth or flowing. However, Richie Hawtin has taken the tracks and reconstructed them in such a manner that one can't help but be amazed at this masterpiece.

This album is a definite must-have for ALL techno fans. This is the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ground-breaking, 18 Jul 2002
This review is from: DE9: Closer to the Edit (Audio CD)
Once again Hawtin sets the standard. Whilst most of the worlds DJ's are churning out the same old boring CD's, along comes a piece of magic that breathes new life into the concept of mixing.

This is a breathtaking compilation, created from a wide range of different tracks - all sampled, looped, cut-up and re-edited (hence the title). Percussive grooves, sonic funk, pounding beats, and haunting melodies are all showcased here.

The CD begins with Hawtin's trademark sound - a deep, minimal, echoing beat that slowly builds and becomes a completely different track without you even realising. There is so much going on that every time you hear this CD you will notice something different. This is the style of the whole mix - melodies from one track layered over beats and percussion of another, then stripped down to the basic elements and re-assembled to form a totally new sound.

This is an awesome collection of techno from one of the world's best producers of electronic music. Very few artists would dare to release anything like this, but Hawtin has broken the rules and provided both quantity and quality in a style that most DJ's will spend a lifetime trying to match.

The sheer number of tracks on this mix shows that Hawtin is more interested in showcasing quality electronic music and keeping the mix fluid rather than spending an hour trying to beat-match 10 tunes to perfection. He is more a composer than DJ, and the production on this CD is flawless. It's the stuff Beethoven would have made if he had a sampler and drum machine.

There is nothing else quite like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars De9: Close To Perfection, 20 Sep 2001
This review is from: DE9: Closer to the Edit (Audio CD)
Blinding, just blinding, or should that be deafening... whatever, this mix is rather good. 'Mix' not in the conventional, beat-match and cross fade manner; this is tech-art. A Pollack of a piece. 70-odd tracks and something like 150 samples marbled together into a 53 minute pastiche which left this reviewer drooling(!). If you've heard Decks, EFX and 909 (another beauty), don't be expecting anything like the industrial German uber-tech of Nitzer-Ebb, this release is much deeper. Closer to Detroit.

Personal standouts (if you can discern them) include the 2 Dollar Egg 'Green Apple/Stereo Virus' fusion and Rework's 'Anyway I Know You'. Add jewels from Carl Craig and Hawtin himself and this becomes a rare casket of loveliness.

Can't wait for him to take it to the road...
