A really first rate recording of a lovely and very tuneful operetta by Henri Goublier (1888-1951),dating from 1915. Don't let the obscurity of this operetta,or the fact that you may not have heard of any of the singers put you off.This is a very fine operetta and extremely well sung and performed.In fact,the performance is every bit as good as the very best emi operetta recordings,if not better than some.
As to the operetta itself; if you enjoy Lehar or Oscar Straus at his best,you should enjoy this.In fact,Goublier's operetta is,in terms of it's sumptuous orchestration and refined lyricism,a sort of French equivalent,ie closer to Lehar's 'Merry Widow',or Oscar Straus's 'A Waltz Dream',than 'Die Fledermaus'or the operetta's of Offenbach or his contemporaries. The use of the chorus as an accompaniment to the 'heroine's' aria (such a beautiful voice)in act one,is truly heavenly,and as good as any comparable effect in the 'Merry Widow'.
The dialogue is another delight.It is so well performed,you really don't have to worry if you can't understand French.In fact,the quality of the dialogue & the sensitive use of sound effects,where required,is an absolute masterclass on how this sort of thing should be done.And the French language spoken this beatifully is so musical anyway! Finally,the recording dates from 1963,but is in stereo and of very good quality for it's time. There is no libretto,but the music is so lovely & the performance is so good it really doesn't matter very much.Incidentally,contrary to Amazon's listing,this is actually a 2 cd set. Warmly recommended!
