Lidstrom is an intrepid, original cellist; this album of "encores" testifies to his imaginative approach to the instrument and his mercurial sense of humour (very apparent to all who have worked with him). The opening Korngold hornpipe sets the tone for the lighter, faster pieces, all of which are dispatched with deft, virile energy - try Montsalvatge's Canto Negro and Rameau's Air Vif for contrasting examples of this, both beautifully arranged by Lidstrom himself. Many of the other tracks are nostalgic to the point of schmaltz (Percy Grainger's heart-warming Sussex Mummers' Christmas Carol, for instance), but played with such genuine feeling and insight that they won't fail to draw in the most cynical of listeners. Forsberg's playing is a model of chamber pianism, bringing verve and luscious colour to every score instead of simply "accompanying". This is not only an engaging set of short pieces, but a chance to hear an unusual approach to cello playing where character and rapport take precedence over everything else.
