Gottschalk is a cross between Liszt and Scott Joplin, a blend of technical skill and rhythmic interest that makes for a thoroughly beguiling disc. The real showstopper here is Tremolo: grand étude de concert - just astonishing and scarcely believable. But don't think it's just empty virtuosity because it isn't; the music has real flair and fizz but it has substance too.

It would be so easy for music like this to outstay its welcome but the partnership between Philip Martin and Hyperion has produced discs that are well played and well recorded, sufficiently imaginative and ear-catching to listen to again and again.

There are eight volumes in this enterprising series so there's plenty more where this came from. Don't take my word for it, just buy this (or any of the other discs) and revel in music making of the highest order.
