This CD contains all Prokoviev's 78 rpm recordings for EMI, and give us an invaluable insight as to how he wanted his music to sound. He was a famous pianist, noted for his slightly hard-edged sound, but (at least on these discs), he balances virtuosity with lyricism, even tenderness, where needed. He was a sensitive artist, and it's sad that there is so little of his playing available (I believe he made some piano rolls as well). The main item, the 3rd Piano Concerto, is ably accompanied by Coppola and the LSO, and all the items are well transferred, with good clear sound and firm tone. Those seeking modern stero recordings will go elsewhere, but anyone interested in a composer's own thoughts on his music will have no hesitation in acquiring this fascinating disc : highly recommended.

What a phenomenal pianist Prokofiev was! The most difficult 1st movement is played in incredible speed (4 second faster than William Kapell!). Piano sounds a little muffled at times, but sensitive brilliance of his playing still comes through if you set your amplifier in direct mode. He plays 9 Vision fugitives, Suggestion diabolique, Etude and other 7 piano pieces with amazing intricacy and composer's own insight. A revelatory historical document of composer's own interpretation!
