A composer virtually unknown until recently except in his native land, Alfven deserves far greater exposure. He is really much more rounded than his illustrious contemporary Grieg, although no one piece compares with individual Grieg classics.

The 'Prodigal Son' music is pleasant, but a bit unmemorable. The Second Symphony starts in the same way (i.e. the first movement is in a sunny D major, lively and amiable). Then everything changes dramatically, as Alfven seems to be taken over by some inner force (as he acknowledged to himself, according to the sleeve notes). The second movement is dark and dramatic, as if the composer is struggling for some sort of release. There is a central fugue that harks back to Beethoven. The Scherzo is again driven and mesmerising. The Finale starts slowly, then launches into another terrific fugue, which is later combined with a brass chorale. The symphony ends in a white-hot D minor, tragic and inconsolable.

You really should try this: at the risk of sounding biased, I would rate it as equalling the Tchaikovsky symphonies in inspiration, but with more intellectual bite. And Alfvén never quite managed anything like it again: the inner force left him.
