Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Offering you the chance to fly 31 Russian, German and American planes IL2 Sturmovik plans to give the mantle held by Microsoft's Combat Flight Sim a run for its money.

Based mostly on the Russian side of things, this flight simulator will appeal to anyone looking for a challenge and features everything from stalling engines, impressive AI run enemy and even the ability to play the gunner positions on some planes.

While the game play will keep you on your toes for many a mission--there is a level editor included to further your enjoyment--the real icing on the cake is in the little details. View the plane from outside while you shoot your way through a dogfight and you'll notice cartridges falling to the ground. Go too high and the plane starts to leave turbulence trails.

Multiplayer options haven't been neglected either and the game can accommodate up to a whopping 32 players in dogfight mode and 16 when tackling co-operative missions, making this a great game to play with friends.

If you're a fan of the Microsoft combat flight series, then IL2 Sturmovik is going to be the perfect addition to your catalogue. If however, you are new to the flight simulator genre, then this might be a little too taxing to start with. --Jason Denwood

Manufacturer's Description
The IL-2 Sturmovik flight simulator highlights the legendary Red Army ground attack aircraft of the same name, and the historical air combat that took place on the Eastern front during WWII.

Called "flying tank" by the Russians and "the Black Death" by the Germans, the IL-2s proved so much their superiority over the German Messerschmitts and Junkers that Stalin is said to have remarked that "the IL-2 is as important for the Red Army as air and bread!"

In IL-2 Sturmovik, the player will be able to fly the IL-2 and it's derivatives as well as many other Russian, German and even US aircrafts. When the player fly the IL-2, he will attack German tank columns at treetop level, dodge deadly flak and avoid the covering Bf-109s

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive WW2 flight sim, 19 Sep 2002
IL2-Sturmovik is the state of the art for PC WW2 flight sims. If you have a beefy PC (at least P3-1GHz with 256MB RAM and GeForce2 graphics) you are in for a visual treat. The graphics are simply fantastic. Realistic clouds, weather effects (rain, snow, thunder), and lighting. The models are works of art, and the controls let you zoom in to admire them. Damage modelling is superb. You can actually see wooden struts protruding when a wing is shot off! Combat is hectic and difficult, like the real thing. When you do manage to down an enemy you feel like you have really achieved something. To see the sky filled with BF-109's and the ground littered with tanks and AA guns is something else. Flak explodes all around, sunlight glints off your canopy momentarily blinding you, planes shudder, radios scream for help, sirens wail. Amazing.

Downsides (minor IMHO):
1. The interface is rather dry.
2. The supplied music is dreadful. Luckily you can provide your own MP3s.
3. The manual is really not up to scratch and hard to read.
4. The campaign is not dynamic, there is no real sense of "comradeship" with your fellow pilots.

But these are minor quibbles. Maddox games deserve all our praise for creating this game. They continue to upgrade it with *free* updates providing new missions and planes (for example the latest patch 1.2 includes a flyable Stuka with missions). The creator, Oleg Maddox, regularly speaks to fans on the official Ubisoft forums.

Bottom line - if you have any interest at all in flight sims you need this game. It will blow your socks off.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning work of Art., 29 Dec 2001

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It's hard to applaud this work too much. Oleg and his team have pushed the limits of PC based flight simulation to new borders and I thank them for that. This is not a crazily fiddly simulator that only appeals to tech-heads and aviation nuts (although the detail is there if you look for it) because these were relatively simple aircraft with limited instrumentation. This IS a valid attempt at truly recreating the experience of flying a prop driven fighter using a two dimensional VDU. The act of genius here was to allow the mouse to control the pilot's viewpoint. Fly the aircraft with a stick in your right hand and move your virtual head with the mouse in your left. This means the aircraft is truly flyable in three dimensions because you can easily look in any (valid) direction whilst maneouvering. The graphics are incredible: fly a mission then play back the flight from an external viewpoint and I swear that 90% of the time you could be watching a movie of a real aircraft in the sky over Europe. The clouds in particular are amazing, they really look and behave like real clouds. Flying through one shows the difficulty of navigation in that era let alone trying to dogfight inside one (forget it). Ice looks like ice. Rivers look like water (except when frozen in which case they look like reflective ice). Trees look like trees complete with shadows and reflections in water. Other aircraft and vehicles are spot on and scarily accurate when formation flying or in combat. The sound is fantastic. I run a surround sound system and this is the best I've ever heard. Aircraft scream past you from left to right or front to back (etc). Bombs whistle past your head, bullets slam through the air, engines sound like... well, engines. Lastly, the force feedback. I promise you it's worth buying an FF stick just for this application. You can feel every bump in the airfield, every kiss of the wheels on the grass, every imminent stall, every recoil of your cannon, every bullet slamming into your wings, every judder as your wingman passes within metres of your plane. Superb!
NOTE: German aircraft do not display swastikas as standard because the design team (wrongly in my opinion) decided not to offer the chance of political statements. For the purposes of accuracy this can be rectified by simply downloading a file from the various Il-2 websites.

5.0 out of 5 stars A scarily-realistic WW2 flight sim, 6 Dec 2001
The IL-2 Sturmovic was a Russian ground attack plane of the Second World War, and more IL-2s were made than any other aircraft in history. This game lets you fly the IL-2 (in various different versions), and a load of other Russian and German aircraft, over the bloodiest battlefields the world has ever known. The planes may be unfamiliar to those used to the more familiar British and American models featured in the majority of sims, but this makes IL-2 even more interesting in my book.

The makers of IL-2 have put loads of effort into getting every last detail of the aircraft just right, and it shows. They look amazing, they feel like real aircraft (warts and all) and they come apart like real aircraft when you get shot at, which is a regular occurance.

IL-2's graphics are first rate, too, with beautiful lighting effects from the Sun, meaty explosions, and fantastic-looking trees and buildings.

If you want to know what flying a WW2 plane was like, IL-2 will bring you closer than any other game out there. It might not feature Spitfires and Mustangs, but if you don't buy it for this reason you'll be missing out in a big way.
