Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Ghost Recon is an atmospheric first-person shooter in the vein of Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear. Taking on the role of platoon commander of an elite special forces unit, your task is to command your way through 15 single-player missions, investigating downed helicopters, blowing up bridges and protecting troops as you try to stay out of trouble behind enemy lines.

The graphics are similar to that of the previous instalments by Red Storm, the game's developers, and the sound is superb, taking full advantage of Creative's EAX technology to bring you rolling thunder, tracer bullets as they whiz past and the echo of your own footsteps.

While there are plenty of options for the single player, Ghost Recon also offers great Multiplayer action and you can either play against each other or co-operatively.

If you're a fan of the original Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear this is simply more missions to chew on, but if you are looking for something a little more adventurous then you still can't beat Operation Flashpoint --Jason Denwood

Product Description

In this new Tom Clancy franchise, you take command of "The Ghosts", an elite squad of military personnel equipped with the latest experimental real-world weaponry. Whenever there is military conflict, the Ghosts are the first on the ground.

Russia has fallen under the control of ultra nationalistic politicians intent on rebuilding the Iron Curtain. This leads to conflict with NATO as Russia attempts to reclaim the breakaway Republic of Georgia, and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. As the regional wars escalate out of control, the casualties mount, and the Ghosts are sent in. Take command of the Ghosts through a series of missions that range from demolitions, to search and rescue, to all out firefights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lock and Load!, 23 Mar 2002
By Mr. A. Privett "I only drink until the scream... (Pub) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When you have a game from the makers of the Rainbow Six series you'd expect excellent realism and gameplay.

Well, you'd be absolutely right; in fact, the level of detail in Ghost Recon is even higher. The graphics are superb, with trees blowing in the breeze, excellent weather effects and vast landscapes. Wonderful atmospheric sounds of trees creaking, birds singing, crunching snow.

The maps are great and varied: Towns with ruined buildings for cover, Mountainous terrain, Moscow city streets with snow underfoot, grassy hillsides and a sub pen.

The fireteam control interface is good, and with a little practice you will be able to flank the enemy before pinning them down.

Multifarious weapons: Sniper rifles, semi-automatic assault rifles with 203 grenade launchers and anti-tank rocket launchers, sidearms, claymores, grenades etc.

I found this title to be far better than Operation Flashpoint. It's far more realistic and tense. The operative word here is stealth. You don't rush in with guns blazing. You move slowly, searching out the enemy, lest they see you and cut you down in a hail of bullets.

On the multiplayer front I would say that unless you have a cable connection I wouldn't bother to play online. You'll find enemies popping up in front of you and disappearing again.

Also, pay attention to the system requirements: 128MB, 16MB 3D card, Pentium II 450 MHz (This really is the minimum). This game needs a faster CPU that Rogue Spear. I have an Athlon 650MHz with 256MB RAM and a 32bit TNT2 - before that I had 128MB, 450 Celeron and a Voodoo 3 3000 (16MB) and that would play with the bear minimum graphics. I've seen it at 64bit and was even more amazing.

If your system can take it I recommend you get it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic game, but too short, 17 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Unlike Operation Flashpoint, where missions take place often in the midst of a full-scale battle, Ghost Recon is a covert-ops game. Six team members spread over 3 groups infiltrate the terrain and get the job done. No piloting of vehicles, just infantry. Stealth is crucial at all times. Tactics play an important role and it is vital that a new player gets the hang of the command map, which allows you to issue orders to other team members.
The game is ultra-realistic. You cant pilot vehicles because, well, how many infantry soldiers know how to fly a plane? Exactly. You can't jump or pick up enemy weapons. They're 3 stances to advance at, standing, crouched and crawling. This adds to the tension as you dart from cover to cover, sniping at the enemy. Interestingly, you can save missions to watch later on as videos.
All in all, a fantastic, atmospheric and thoughtful game. Unfortunately, there are only 15 misssions in the campaign and each mission is too short. I completed it in 6 hours! And you thought Max Payne was short. However, the multiplayer aspect is superb and, yes, better than Counterstrike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh My!, 9 Jul 2002
After initially not being able to play this game as i hadn't updated my graphics card (was using a voodoo 3), i've just got into the game and i can say without a duobt that it lives up to the hype and my expectations.
You know the storyline but nothing prepares you for the world of the "Ghosts". Realistic graphics, weather conditions and scenery makes you take care because as the wind blows the bushes and trees infront of you, you dont know if its an enemy soldier waiting to kill you. Made me extra paranoid i can tell ya.
Buy this game if you love strategy games (its better and easier to use than Operation: Flashpoint) and get the Desert Siege Add-on pack too, its well wortgh the money!!! :)#
