Amazon.co.uk Review
Small quirky comedy thrillers such as Drowning Mona are one of the things that American cinema does best and far too rarely. Peter Steinfeld's appealing script attracted a solid cast of stars under the direction of newcomer Nick Gomez (whose previous work includes episodes of The Sopranos). It seems that someone has cut Mona's brake cables and she drove to her death by drowning. Bette Midler's Mona manages to make it entirely plausible that almost everyone might have wanted to kill her: from her son's business partner Eddie (Casey Affleck) to her husband's mistress Rona (Jamie Lee Curtis). The local police chief (Danny DeVito), already burdened with subordinates who refer to running away from danger as "securing the perimeter" and the impending marriage of his daughter (Neve Campbell) to the sweet but unreliable Eddie, has to make sense of the farrago of lies and half-truths which is all anyone will tell him. This is an ingenious tightly plotted film which is never too busy to scatter odd little gags at its margins; it's a tall tale, whose complicated telling is half the fun.

On the DVD The DVD comes with the theatrical trailer, a director's commentary, interviews with the stars and four deleted scenes. The picture is 1.85:1 anamorphic and the sound is Dolby Surround. --Roz Kaveney

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly Dull, 5 April 2002
By Gary Kerr (Ayrshire, Scotland) - See all my reviews
What a terrible waste of a great cast. Drowning Mona suffers from the fact that it's just not funny.
I tried hard to like this movie because I enjoy watching Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis and Bette Midler but they just could't do anything with a bad screenplay.
Casey Affleck wears a blond wig throughout and it's hard to focus on anything else in his scenes.
The DVD contains a director commentary which lags about 2 minutes behind the movie action thus making it extremely difficult to follow.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unattractive characters inspire only rare chuckles, 4 Jan 2003
By Joseph Haschka (Glendale, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
DROWNING MONA begins with the on-screen message that the fictional town in the film, Verplanck, NY, was selected as a test market for the Yugo automobile. That's why everybody seems to drive them - old ones. It says a lot about the film that this is one of its more amusing aspects.

Mona is Mona Dearly, played by Bette Midler, a hateful gorgon of a woman who drowns when her car (a Yugo, naturally) plummets off a cliff into the Hudson River. After it's discovered that the vehicle's brake fluid has been drained and the brake lines cut, Verplanck's Police Chief Rash, portrayed by Danny DeVito, astutely smells murder. Unfortunately, there are too many individuals who might have wished the hellcat dead: her son Jeff, her husband Phil, her son's and husband's lover Rona (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), Rash's daughter Ellen, and her son's business partner Bobby (also Ellen's fiancé). To give you an idea of Mona's temperament, she may have severed her son's hand from his arm with a cleaver as he was reaching for her beer. At least, that's one story circulating about town to explain his lost appendage.

Only the chief's daughter, Ellen, is anywhere near being an attractive persona in this relatively un-comic black comedy. DeVito, who can usually be counted upon to elicit some guffaws, has a remarkably straight and sober role. Curtis is downright unattractive as the promiscuous waitress. Phil, Jeff and Bobby are three of the most forgettable characters ever to adorn the silver screen.

Of course, Rash unties the Gordion Knot at the end, and justice is served. But, by that time, I didn't care in the slightest. To be evenhanded, I do recall chuckling maybe twice during the film. I just wish I could remember about what, so I could tell you, dear reader. It was certainly not when Jeff and Bobby, co-owners of failing landscaping business, quarrel over losing a customer because Jeff had purposely run over the client's dog with a power lawnmower. Or, when Mona smacks Phil with an iron frying pan. That just about describes the general tenor of DROWNING MONA.

4.0 out of 5 stars A unique black comedy, 4 Nov 2004
By A Customer
This little gem of black humour and murder is great to watch simply for its fantastic cast. Neve Campbell(SCREAM),Jamie Lee Curtis(HALLOWEEN),Bette Midler and Danny DeVito head this comical who dunnit murder mystery. Mona Dearly played by Bette Midler has a road accident and plunges into a river. The problem is that everyone in the town absolutely hated her. This makes it hard for police chief Danny Devito to find out whose responsible for Mona's death. ok theres not a great plot here, but it is well acted and so funny, you just have to watch it. The cast all turn in great performances and it's truely great to see these big names together in a movie. I recommend this movie to anyone who loves black comedies or fans of the main stars.
